Because I’m basically a hermit, these times often feel like I am alone in the storm, that no one else is feeling this. Today at the supermarket, I was behind a woman with a whistle attached to her purse. I suddenly didn’t feel like I was all alone anymore. Thank you, anonymous woman.
Thank you too, all you Shadesters. It often feels, probably to many of us, that we’re alone. Look for the signs. They’re out there.

This is going to turn into an angry, all Twin Cities, Shade. I’ve avoided doing this because you come here for national news, critters and camaraderie. Well, the Renee Good murder is national news. I have no special insight to bring. I’m just a hermit who happens to live in Minneapolis.
But I do have a special interest in this story as my friends and neighbors are all impacted by it. “I’ve suffered for my art. Now it’s your turn.”

New Poll Ranks ICE Below Genital Herpes
© Totally-Legit Polling — 2026
A new poll conducted by our partners at Totally-Legit Polling (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ rating on ratethefakepollsters.com), has shown that over 9/10 people with pubic hair would prefer genital herpes to ICE in their city.
Asked in the poll, “Given the choice between having ICE in your town and genital herpes, would you choose ICE or herpes?”
- ICE — 8.1%
- Herpes — 91.2%
- Undecided — 0.7%
The margin of error is +/- 8.1%
One respondent said “well, at least ICE isn’t going to last forever.”
There’s that anger again...

I’m just barely warming up to this (Minneapolis mayor) Jacob Frey. In the past he’s shown the spine of an overcooked spaghetti noodle. This is a story that I got from parts of dKos that I don’t know, but it’s a gift article and an op-ed from my mayor, who seems to be stepping up to the plate. Thank you, Jacob Frey.
NYT (gift article, hopefully)
I’m the Mayor of Minneapolis. Trump Is Lying to You.
On Aug. 1, 2007, the Interstate 35W bridge spanning the Mississippi River in Minneapolis collapsed into the water during rush hour. Thirteen people died, and dozens more were injured.
In the immediate aftermath, the president, a Republican, showed up in a city full of Democrats ready to help.
Minneapolis leaders were passionate and vocal critics of President George W. Bush’s policies at the time. But when the crisis struck, it didn’t matter. We were partners in what mattered most: saving lives, steadying our community and rebuilding infrastructure. Cities could count on the administration in a crisis. Politics stopped, quite literally, at the water’s edge.
Blue cities like Minneapolis used to be able to count on good-faith partnerships with the federal government under both Republican and Democratic administrations. Under the Biden administration, our police officers worked with federal agents and the U.S. attorney’s office to bring down shooting rates in North Minneapolis. The effort wasn’t political — it was practical, and it continues to keep people safe. ✂️
It’s a long, but good op-ed. Thank you, Jacob Frey. For once.

Jen Psaki has a good segment here. The right is pointing to this as to the murderer, Jonathan Ross, as being hit by Renee Good’s car. When I look at the video, it’s much more likely that the scumbag slipped on the ice. It’s been that kind of a week here. Lots of snow on the ground, temps above freezing during the day, freezing overnight. It was 9:30AM or so, so the temps would have been below freezing or so close to just above that it doesn’t really matter. The sun only dips above the horizon at a bit before 8:00 AM here these days, so no chance to melt at 9:30 AM He slipped.
4:22 or so in the video.

One thing I’ve learned this week is that “weaponized their vehicle” is shorthand for unarmed people trying to get away from armed people pointing their weapons at them.
Allison Gill (Mueller She Wrote) has commentary about the “brake check” tactics that ICE uses as an excuse to confront people. If anyone is “weaponizing their vehicles”, It’s ICE.

ICE intensifies Twin Cities operation after killing of Renee Good, protests
Federal immigration authorities intensified a weekslong operation in the Twin Cities over the weekend following the Wednesday killing of Renee Nicole Good by ICE agent Jonathan Ross.
Residents pushed back, led by a growing network of rapid responders hounding U.S. ICE and Border Patrol vehicles and agents across the metro area.
Thousands marched peacefully in Minneapolis Saturday to remember Good and protest the Trump administration’s expanding immigration crackdown. Many marchers stopped to pay their respects as the procession moved from Powderhorn Park past the intersection where the fatal shooting occurred.
Saturday’s protest, the largest since Good’s killing, was more subdued than a Friday evening gathering outside downtown Minneapolis hotels where ICE agents were said to be staying.
Protesters blew whistles, banged drums and shouted taunts outside the hotels for hours before some tried to force their way into the Canopy by Hilton at 700 Third Street South, causing about $6,000 in damage, the Star Tribune reported. City and state police ordered protesters to disperse around midnight and arrested about 30 people without incident, officials said Saturday.
Near Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, a smaller group braved chilly winds to maintain a near-permanent presence outside an ICE operations hub and detention center.
U.S. Reps. Ilhan Omar, Angie Craig and Kelly Morrison said they were denied entry to the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building shortly after arriving for what they called an oversight visit on Saturday morning.
Later in the day, Politico reported that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem — who oversees ICE and said this weekend she’d ordered hundreds more agents to join at least 2,000 already in the Twin Cities — signed an order on Thursday requiring a week’s notice for Congressional visits to immigrant detention centers. ✂️

Morrison: "We were met when we came up to the gates of the ICE facility with a phalanx of about 25 armed officers who were quite menacing in their approach. So to suggest 3 members of Congress who were there unarmed to conduct oversight is somehow an inflammatory action is patently untrue."

Tom Homan pleads with Minnesota leaders to tamp down ICE rhetoric
White House border czar Tom Homan blamed Democratic leaders in Minnesota for escalating “hateful rhetoric” after an ICE officer fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Good in Minneapolis on Wednesday.
The pleas from Homan and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem to turn down the temperature come as Minnesota officials like Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Gov. Tim Walz have accused federal officials of escalating tensions by surging federal agents to the state and refusing to cooperate with state and local officials.
“The hateful rhetoric has caused a lot of this violence,” Homan said in a Sunday interview on “Fox News Sunday” with host Jacqui Heinrich. “So I said way back in March if the hateful rhetoric doesn’t decrease, there will be bloodshed, and, unfortunately, I was right, and it’s not over. There will be more bloodshed unless we decrease the hateful rhetoric.” ✂️
It’s funny — the bloodshed started before the “hateful rhetoric”. Somehow, calling the administrations descriptions “bullshit” and telling ICE to “get the fuck out of Minneapolis” is hateful. Shooting an innocent woman in the head three times and calling her a “fucking bitch” immediately afterward isn’t hateful at all.
x
WELKER: Do you bear any responsibility to bring down the temperature?
FREY: Of course. But I dropped an F bomb and they killed somebody. I think the killing somebody is the inflammatory element here and not the F bomb.

'Nobody wants you here!' Border Patrol chief hounded at Target during bathroom break
A shocking video circulating on social media on Sunday appeared to show protesters, activists, and some shoppers at a Target in St. Paul, Minnesota hounding Border Patrol chief Greg Bovino and a caravan of agents after they stopped by the store for a bathroom break.
The video was published by Ford Fisher, editor-in-chief of News2Share, and showed Bovino quickly exiting the men's restroom in Target and making his way to the exit. He was surrounded by Customs and Border Patrol agents, one of whom was also recording the interaction. Along the way, Bovino and the agents were berated with comments like "F--- you!" and "You're a f------ coward."
"Gout out! Nobody wants you here!" someone can be heard shouting at the agents. ✂️
I looked and couldn’t find a more non-fascist friendly way to post this.
I don’t usually post Xitter videos. Sorry if I muffed this one. This is the first place I worked when I moved to the Twin Cities. I met my future wife there. I’ve used the joke before: “You can get anything you need at Target!” That was before Target turned into a racist, collaborator company of Quislings. It was fairly egalitarian when I worked there. Then I left and the whole place went to shit.
Correlation does not imply causation.

1896 Davidson, North Carolina Dr. Henry Smith and some of his graduate students at Davidson College have been reading of the work of German physicist Walter Roentgen and his mysterious rays that see through flesh and activate photographic plates. He and his students set up the equipment to generate the same sort of rays and then bring in a cadaver from the local morgue. With permission, Dr. Smith shoots a bullet into the hand of the cadaver, and then he and his students take several photographic plates to locate it in the body. They succeed, the first X-Ray photographs produced in the United States and the marker pointing to its coming value in medicine.

NATIONAL CURRIED CHICKEN DAY
When making a true curried chicken, don't reach for the curry powder. Instead, stew the chicken in a sauce made from clarified butter (known as ghee) onions, garlic, and a medley of spices such as cumin, coriander, cinnamon, ginger, and turmeric. Other ingredients include chilies and tomatoes.
Curry powder made its way into recipes by way of Britain. Their long-time presence in India left a desire for the flavors of the East on the palates of many of the English. Curry powder and recipes with it existed as early as the 1700s but curried chicken and other curried meat recipes gained popularity during the British Raj beginning in 1858.
Kiss a Ginger Day
Red is the rarest hair color, with only 2% of the population having it. Most redheads are of northern or western European ancestry; the highest percentage of redheads come from Scotland, followed by Ireland. In ancient Greece, some redheads were considered to be vampires. Many redheads were killed in Europe between the 15th and 18th centuries because they were perceived to be associated with witchcraft.
Red hair is caused by a mutated MC1R gene. If both parents carry this gene—even if they don't have red hair themselves—their child has a one in four chance of being born with red hair. Those with red hair actually have less hair on their heads. A redhead has on average 90,000 strands of hair on their head, while blondes have about 110,000, and brunettes have 140,000. What redheads lack in number they make up in thickness, though, as strands of red hair are thicker than the strands of other colors. Red hair also strongly holds its pigment; it is hard to dye red hair a different color unless it is bleached first.
National Clean Off Your Desk Day
National Clean Off Your Desk Day takes place on the second Monday of January each year. When was the last time you cleaned out your workspace? Did you know the average work desk can be 100 times filthier than a kitchen table? Nasty, right? But there’s more. A work desk is probably 400 times less hygienic than an average toilet seat. Hygienic surroundings keep us free from all kinds of diseases. A clean workspace unclutters and inspires. And scientific research says tidy desks make you more efficient. So, take time today for some thorough decluttering and cleaning.
Remember, a messy desk is an invitation to chaos! A clean desk, on the other hand, helps you focus, be more productive, and generally makes you feel good about your workspace (as does a new laptop stand if you want to treat yourself). And when we say clean we don’t just mean physical clutter. That’s correct, your computer desktop counts too. Drag those files into a nice, neat folder!
National Hot Tea Day
Originally hailing from China, hot tea has a long history that dates back almost 5000 years. One story goes that an emperor was sitting under a tree with his hot water when some dried leaves fell into it and the rest, as they say, is history.
While no one knows if this legend is exactly how it happened, the truth is that hot tea has been appreciated and enjoyed by humans for centuries.
Starting out as a beverage with medical purposes, tea has been made from all sorts of different herbs and leaves over the years.
But the most commonly thought of version of hot tea is typically a black tea, which comes from the plant Camellia Sinensis. Records of drinking this hot tea in Asia date back to the 3rd century BC, but it didn’t make its way to Europe until the 16th century.
