What Have We Become?
Public support for ICE has decreased by 30 points over the past year, dropping from a +16% net approval rating when Trump took office early last year to -14% today.
As the public becomes more aware of ICE's aggressive, heavy-handed, and sometimes criminal tactics, support for abolishing ICE has risen to 42% approval, compared to 49.5% disapproval, up from 19% approval and 66% disapproval in January 2025.
A new YouGov poll finds 52% of Americans now disapprove of ICE and the way it’s handling its job, while just 39% approve…
A YouGov poll of over 2,600 U.S. adults on Jan. 7, found people don't like the way ICE operates.
- Just 27% said the agency's tactics were "about right" compared to 51% who called them "too forceful". Another 10% said they were "not forceful enough."
- A 44% plurality of adults approved of recent ICE protests, while 42% disapproved.

Magaziner replied:
Kristi Noem’s an idiot, right? Like, she went on TV before any of the facts were in. She made up this story on TV about ICE agents trying to dig their truck out of the snow or something, which was clearly false. Like she didn’t even realize that there was gonna be video of what happened when she went up and gave a false story.
Everybody in the Trump administration lies, but she’s not even good at the lie, right? And we’ve seen that over and over again. So, you know, it would be ridiculous, it would be funny if it wasn’t so sad and tragic because actual people’s lives are being ruined and in some cases ended by the lawlessness of the administration. And, again, like, if they had just done what they said they would do and just focus on people with serious criminal records, no one would be complaining, but they can’t help themselves.
After the shooting, President Donald Trump blamed Good for the shooting, calling her a “professional agitator.” Vice President JD Vance alleged she was a “deranged leftist.”

Imperial Dreams
In an article in the Atlantic magazine, Peter Wehner wonders if a governing style totally devoid of morality is sustainable. A cynical, Realpolitik approach would assert that what matters in international relations is that a country’s interests are advanced — regardless of the means employed.
Wehner concludes that the ends do not justify the means. How one achieves objectives is an important consideration in the conduct of diplomacy.
Peter Wehner: “The United States under Trump is dark, aggressive, and lawless. It has become, in the words of Representative Ogles, a predator nation. This period of our history will eventually be judged, and the verdict will be unforgiving — because Thrasymachus was wrong.”
In Donald Trump’s America, the law of the jungle rules. The strong do what they can; the weak do what they must...
“Justice matters more than injustice. And I have a strong intuition and a settled hope that the moral arc of the universe will eventually bend that way.”
