There’s so much going on right now it’s overwhelming knowing where even to begin to try to get a Top Comments diary together. I suspect I’m not alone in feeling like there’s two of me existing in the same body…
One version of me is scared and angry watching and reading reports of ICE assaulting, kidnapping, murdering people for no reason other than they’re there. This version spends hours on Instagram, Threads and Bluesky looking for information that may help my friends and neighbors. Information such as the three truckloads of unmarked vehicles in the telltale all-black or all-white delivered this weekend to the ICE Detention Center in Burlington, MA, approximately ten miles from were I live. Or that ICE is ramping up in Portland, ME, where a friend has a company that employs a large number of immigrants.
The other version of me is on week two of the organizational challenge I mentioned in a recent Top Comments, where having cleaned out and organized my refrigerator, freezer and pantry we’re moving on to examine and organize the spaces and items we use to prepare, serve and store that food. Week One helped me see what my issues are with food (leftover pandemic scarcity fears, concerns over not being able to obtain the convenience foods I use to make keto eating simpler, and a mindset that was deeply affected by growing up low-income with food concerns) and I’m proud to say I’m making some GOOD changes. This version is attending yoga class, getting together with beloved friends for a fun evening together, and getting our scaredy dog up to my veterinarian SIL’s house Saturday so she could give him a rabies shot without the sedation his local vet requires.
I KNOW deep in my core that the business of *living my life* is one of the reasons I am fighting so hard against the fascist authoritarians currently trying to conquer the nation, and yet I feel guilty when I have fun.
And then there’s the moments when both coexist in the same space and those are what hurt the most. My niece, a recent college grad who stood in line for seven hours on Election Day to vote for Trump, actively avoided speaking to us and spent four hours in her room rather than be in shared space with us. The refrigerator calendar is full of work schedules and doctor’s appointments, with ONE exception… the entry for tomorrow reads “Supreme Court Case Sports”. So while my SIL was being helpful and patient and I am grateful for her assistance, I also know she and her family are the people who likely would have turned Anne Frank in and who probably think that if Renee Good had “only complied” all would have been well. I spent those four hours being polite because (a) I’m the inlaw, and (b) out of deference to my Harris-voting MIL who cohouses there.
What sorts of mental gymnastics are YOU doing as you go about both resisting and also figuring out what’s for dinner? Both are Every Single Damned Day activities. Hop over to the comments and let’s chat!

Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down. Please remember that comment inclusion in Top Comments does not constitute support or endorsement by diarist, formatter, Top Comments writers or DailyKos. Questions, complaints or comments? It was quiet in nomination land.
