There are many places in the blogosphere where I read about people removing MAGA friends, family and randos from their lives. I get it. I, personally, do not want to deal with these people either. Being a business owner in a very red, Trumpy area of a blue state, eliminating MAGA from my life, as great as that would be, means my business closes. What bothers me the most about these posts is the way some of these posts subtly look down upon the people who aren't doing the same is as disappointing as the posts about leaving behind red states because they are voting against their own best interests.
On that point, I will admit I used to be one of those people. In fact, in some ways, I still am. Still, I do understand the issue from their side because it's the same for me and MAGA people.
Have I reduced my interactions with friends and family who are MAGA? Yes, and thankfully, there are very few of those in my life. For our business, we try to have a no political talk in the store just to avoid issues. I am lucky that our three employees are all either not political or affirmatively not MAGA. I probably would have fired/not hired them if they were.
It's the same for not patronizing MAGA businesses. If some business is clearly promoting MAGA or Trump, I won't patronize it, but most businesses are owned by Republicans or support them. I'd basically rarely be able to buy stuff locally.
What do I do? I have gotten involved in the local Democratic Party and have done more canvassing during election season. I write Vote Forward letters often. Of course, as anyone who reads me regularly, I meet with the staff of my members of Congress. While all my state and local legislators are GQP, I do plan on reaching out to the one person who seems slightly sane on a topic that should be nonpartisan and really needs to be pushed in NY: newborn screening. We'll see what happens.
Finally, San Diego is going well. Weather is beautiful, and the trade show went well. Should be back in NY tomorrow night barring a delay like we had flying out.
See everyone next week.
