The only reliable American aid is McDonald’s. Let that sink in.
x
Good morning to readers; Kyiv remains in Ukrainian hands.
When McDonald's first came to Ukraine in 1997, it symbolised the end of an era: the collapse of the Iron Curtain.
But during the war the chain has offered shelter and warmth to many and today is a symbol of resilience.

Remember the Russian diplomat found dead in Cyprus last week, just a day after a former Russian potash executive went missing in the country? He appears to have been an undercover intelligence officer.

Soon after Panov’s death, independent Russian media outlets — along with the Telegram channel VChK-OGPU, which claims to have sources inside Russia’s security services — reported that the 47-year-old was a cryptography specialist who had worked with Russian intelligence agencies.
Panov spent 17 years at Russia’s Foreign Ministry and was also linked to both military intelligence and the Federal Security Service (FSB). According to The Insider, he studied at the academy of the Federal Protective Service (FSO) in Voronezh. In the early 2000s, he worked at the Atlas Research and Technology Center, an institution that reported directly to the FSB, according to the outlets iStories and Agentstvo.

1/ Cuts to public funding due to money being redirected to Russia's war effort are having increasingly severe effects on its already struggling health service. In one region, a collapsing maternity care system has produced horrifying stories of mistreatment and abuse. ⬇️

2/ An increasing number of Russian regions are facing financial crises due to the federal government making severe cuts to regional budgets. This is having a host of negative effects, ranging from collapsing healthcare to cities being flooded with sewage.
3/ The West Siberian region of Kemerovo is one of many to be affected, and faces a healthcare crisis that locals say is already costing lives. A recent scandal has centred on the Maternity Hospital No. 1 in the city of Novokuznetsk, where a number of newborns have died.
4/ The hospital is currently closed with two of its senior staff detained by investigators under suspicion of causing death by negligence. The scandal has resulted in many people coming forward to speak of abusive behaviour and misconduct by the staff.
5/ A relative recounts one particularly horrifying story: "During labour, while pushing, they ripped her out of my sister. She was alive when she was born. And when they ripped her out, they tore the girl's arm off, and the baby died."
6/ "After which they wrapped the child in some rags, placed her on my sister’s chest, turned her over and said: 'Look, this is your dead girl.'"Patients say they had to give birth standing up, with the baby only caught at the last moment as it fell out of them.
7/ Other patients say that the staff take out "all their anger on pregnant women. This isn't a maternity hospital, it's a torture chamber. Have more babies, so to speak, just try not to die in the process." They describe the staff's attitude as "disgusting and rude."
8/ "Imagine a maternity hospital where the staff yells louder than the women giving birth. Screaming obscenities! A maternity hospital where you constantly want to apologise, to say, 'Sorry, I'm giving birth.'"
9/ People living in outlying towns say that it's "better to travel even 100 kilometers and receive quality medical services than to end up at the butchers' shops like those in Novokuznetsk."
10/ The reason for such failings lies in chronic underfunding of hospitals and underpayment of staff, leading them acutely frustrated and driving out the competent and caring ones.
Adam Kadyrov was in a car accident and sent to Moscow for treatment. There are a number of reports about what happened, none of them confirmed, of course.
Supposedly he was driving in a motorcade at high speed through the Chechen capital of Grozny with several cars in the motorcade. There was an obstacle in the road that caused a wreck with the cars plowing into each other like an accordion. There are also some reports that claim a Chechen UFC fighter who was Kadyrov’s bodyguard was killed.
Kadyrov was flown to Moscow for treatment and reportedly suffered a ruptured spleen and broken ribs. But, again, none of that is confirmed.
