Welcome to the KosAbility Open Thread this evening!
Allow me to reintroduce myself, for I’ve been doing some serious lurking these past few years. I’ve published five dairies in the last six years and have not published any in the last two. When I published these dairies, I have received emotional support that I needed at the time. So, let’s get started.
Here is my story:
I became interested in the disability community in 1992 when I underwent brain surgery for an AVM and had my hemorrhagic stroke during the procedure. Needless to say, the stroke changed my life, affecting my right side and speech.
I was trained air-conditioning, heating and refrigeration when I started drawing SSDI. My wife, Charlene (Charlie) and I had two daughters, ages 3 and 5 at the time of the surgery. We became interested in joining a local stroke support organizations in the Dallas, TX area. Charlie went to work for the Stroke Connection Magazine and I went to college to retrain for another vocation.
I graduated in 2002 with a degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, where I worked fulltime for two years. I did not have the energy to handle working fulltime, so I went parttime and got back on SSDI, where I spent 12 years in disability employment field.
I’ve written diaries in the past about having family members with strokes, dementia, broken hip and Alzheimer's disease. My wife and I have been caregivers.
My wife, Charlie, died of ALS 3 years ago…. I am grateful for receiving tremendous emotional support of the Daily Kos and the KosAbility community.
Now, that’s my story, what brought you to KosAbility?
