There has not been much yet of a personal impact for me in the year plus the Felon has re-occupied the White House. I am still waiting to see how I will be affected by the coming Medicaid and Medicare cuts. This weekend I was personally affected by one of the many ways the Felon has been breaking the government.
This weekend, I went to Jacksonville, FL for a memorial for my college boss’ husband who recently died. The memorial was very nice. I did not know he was part of a long sword competition group which gave us a demonstration of different disciplines. I also found out his grandfather had been a member of the Hungarian Saber Olympic team at one point. Definitely not any context in which I knew him.
My mom and I flew on Sunday to LaGuardia airport instead of JFK because I am an idiot. I mistakenly booked that flight just because it was the cheapest and did not actually look at the airport listed. Anyway, we got to the airport to wait for our flight when I received a text message telling me the flight would be delayed getting to NY. While the flight would take off nearly on time, the flight would not land until over an hour later. Basically, what should have been a 2 hour flight would become a 3 and half hour flight. Seemed really strange.
After everyone boarded but before we pushed back, the captain got on the horn to announce why the flight would take more than three hours. He told us they could not take the normal flight path over Washington, DC because there were not enough air traffic controllers to move all the planes through DC airspace. Instead, we would be flying west over the Appalachian Mountains up to Detroit before the plane would be able to turn towards NYC. Ridiculous.
This is definitely small bore compared to the terror being unleashed on places like Minneapolis, Charlotte, Chicago, LA, etc., but it does show how small cuts to necessary agencies can have wide ranging impacts on everyone.
I will be off once again next week as I take my final trip for while to Manassas, VA for a friend’s birthday. The trip will probably include a sojourn to DC, but I will not be hitting Capitol Hill this time. Enjoy President’s week and I will see you all at the end of the month.
