There were three special state legislative elections held today. While there was very little uncertainty about which party would win in each of these, it is still interesting to see how the outcomes would differ from the most recent races in these same districts.
I am glad report that today’s special elections continued the steady trend we have seen, namely, a shift in favor of the Democrat. In Oklahoma’s 35th house district, which is very deep red, the margin of victory for the Republican, which was a whopping 57% in the most recent contest, was cut by half this time! The two races in Virginia, both in very blue districts, also yielded very impressive results.
Here is a summary of each of today’s results, and how they compare to the most recent previous results in the same race:
Oklahoma House District 35
Todays Result: R + 28.4
Previous Result (2022): R +56.8
Shift: D +28.4
Virginia Senate District 39
Today’s Result: D + 66
Previous Result (2023): D + 57
Shift: D + 9
Virginia House District 5
Todays Result: D + 64
Previous Result (2023): D uncontested
