AI is not merely an environmentally destructive tool of  limited practical use to your average American, or an insanely powerful means of computation that is destroying jobs across the economy at a record pace (and therefore lives and entire communities). Nor is it merely a way to make people stupider, as a recent MIT study concluded. It is a tool for sinister rich fuck-wads to warp reality to their own ends. I am old enough to remember SecDef Rumsfeld’s claim ( while executing an illegal war in Iraq) that the administration “makes [its] own reality.” Well, that pronouncement was about 20 years too early.

Its not about simply the doctoring of innocent cat videos, or the uglifying of design, or the enshittification of music, art, and communication— It’s about the fucking billionaires and the very soil in which their deranged fantasies of absolute power can take root. Fascism exists in an atmosphere in conspiracy and lies, and the shapeshifting land of deep fakes and specious ( though visually convincing crap) is making the job of the sociopaths easier.

Corey Doctrow claims that AI is a bubble and about to crash. I hope he is right, but their is a huge market for digital snakeoil these days.
