I always liked Ash Wednesday. I like the message behind it about remembering that our life is short and we should be kind and helpful to our fellow man, especially toward those who need help the most. However, as I have gotten older, I still deeply resonate with that message, but it seems as if many simply like the aesthetic of having the ash cross on their foreheads and never give a thought to the message it stands for. The older I get, the worse it gets, and I have started saying Ash Wednesday is the day where you find out terrible people are Christian.
It made me think about the people in power who act as if they are Christians but are anything but Christ-like. They profess godliness but act more like the priest and temple assistant who walk around and over the injured person and are nothing like the Good Samaritan who stops to help the injured person. They cut millions from Medicare, they cut food stamps, they use our army to bully the world, they attack our citizens and strip us of our rights, they give tax cuts to the rich and spit on everyone else, they destroy our environment, and so much more. So as Ash Wednesday comes to a close, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
