I want to talk about something important: Voter turnout. Specifically, getting voters who don’t typically vote in elections out to vote for us. There are two groups we need to secure to win, and those are unaffiliated voters and young voters. I want to have this conversation not because we don’t value our historic Democrat voters and older voters (if that’s you reading this, check out the end of this article for what we DO NEED from you!), but we can trust that demographic to get out and vote for us. It’s time that we put some attention towards the other groups, because, frankly, we cannot win without them.
We have GOT to find a way to get people under 40 to vote. That remains the lowest turnout demographic and our biggest opportunity. This election is a turnout game. If we turnout enough voters, we win. In our district in this primary, there was only a 3,570 vote difference between the R ballot and the D ballot requests. We can overcome that with a little work for the general!
Unaffiliated voters WILL play a very important role in this campaign. We have already started the process of forming a community for them to amplify their voices. We will incorporate them into our work, rather than showing up on their doorsteps 2 weeks before the election trying to get their votes. They are the largest voting bloc in our district and our state, and we cannot win without them - nor should we want to. There is nothing wrong with wanting to think and vote independently in today's political climate, especially with levels of corruption on both sides being extreme. We welcome and desire their voices and opinions in this campaign.
Now, to my trusted, older, historically Democrat voters: I NEED YOUR HELP. Talk to your younger neighbors about our campaign. Make a voting plan with your children (or grandchildren!). Organize voter registration drives on college campuses, and in places where young people congregate. Share our content online. Invite a young colleague to volunteer with our campaign. We are counting on you more than ever, because the margin for victory will likely be a small one in this race, and we need EVERY SINGLE VOTE that we can get.
