Our former County Judge, K.P. George was the first Democrat elected to the position and ably led us through the COVID-19 Pandemic. However, he was investigated for corruption by our Progressive Democratic DA Brian Middleton (D) and in a fit of pique K. P. George flipped parties and became a Republican. He was recently convicted of felony money laundering and is currently awaiting sentencing, upon which he would be removed from office but the general election is likely to happen before George exhausts all his remaining legal appeals of his conviction. I feel it is vitally important to keep this county in Democratic hands and I think current County Commissioner Dexter McCoy is the fighting Progressive Democrat we need to lead us as our next County Judge. In Texas, County Judge is an executive position, not a judicial appointment. Fort Bend County has shifted slowly from Red to Blue over my many years here since the early 1980s. With Latinos swinging hard against MAGA and Trump, we are likely to keep it Blue for at least the next few cycles. Other parts of the Democratic coalition are of course our core Black voters as well as Yuppie White Professionals who live in the suburban cities like Sugar Land and also the recent multigenerational immigrant populations from East and South Asia and SE Asia, all of whom keep the rural white conservatives mostly in check. Fort Bend Republicans used to be moderate “Country Club” Republicans, and you could even call its last Republican County Judge just such a moderate “Country Club” Republican. But as mild mannered an inoffensive as former Judge Herbert may have been, his silence in the face of growing MAGA lunacy was deafening and cowardly. Fort Bend County voters took notice and held him accountable for not speaking out against the madness of national Republicans.
If K. P. George had any political sense he would’ve declared himself an Independent, not a Republican. He did run in the Republican primary and came in dead last, which even I could’ve told him would happen, but he was too delusional to listen to common sense and to be fair he certainly would’ve come in last in the Democratic Primary this time around as well. I like what Commissioner McCoy (D) has done for Fort Bend County so far and hope we can install him as our next County Judge to secure the future of Fort Bend County and keep us out of the hands of madmen and lunatics like those running Montgomery County to our north.
