I haven't written a ton of letters to the editor and I'd appreciate some feedback on this one. (Note: in Oregon, all voting is done by mail and the ballots go out in mid-October.)
George W. Bush stubbornly insists that he will not withdraw a single soldier from Iraq "until the Iraqis can defend themselves" - a goal which is no closer today than it was when he prematurely declared "Mission Accomplished" on May 1, 2003. Hundreds of American soldiers are being killed or wounded in Iraq every month, and we are already drawing heavily from our National Guardsmen and reservists. If this bloodshed continues for four more years, where will their replacements come from? Only one place: a military draft.
On September 15, John Edwards made the following clear and simple statement to the mother of a 23-year-old in West Virginia: "There will be no draft when John Kerry is president." John Kerry and John Edwards will not repeat the mistakes of Vietnam. They will not conscript the sons and daughters of America to fight a guerrilla war in a hostile country thousands of miles away. The current administration refuses to make this commitment. To all Oregonians with family members aged 18 to 25: when you receive your ballot this October, cast a vote for Kerry-Edwards. Under George W. Bush, your next piece of mail from the government could be a draft notice.
