For those of you who don't know me, I was the Communications Director for the Badnarik/Libertarian presidential campaign. I am the one on the staff who argued loudly for Badnarik to become involved in the Ohio (and other) recount efforts.
The following message should be of concern to members of the Kososphere, as it directly influences presidential electoral votes in a manner which will be beneficial to you all.
One of the activities in which I am involved is Independent Alabama. Right now, virtually
any money received by Independent Alabama will be used for our Proportional Representation Project. For those of you not aware, proportional representation is defined by
Robert Richie and Steven Hill in this manner:
Proportional representation (PR) is based on the principle that any group of like-minded voters should win legislative seats in proportion to its share of the popular vote. Whereas the winner-take-all principle awards 100 percent of the representation to a 50.1 percent majority, PR allows voters in a minority to win their fair share of representation.
What this means right now for Alabama is that our electoral votes will be cast in a manner proportionate to the actual popular votes cast in a presidential election. This benefits all Alabamians for several reasons:
This proposal makes Alabama's electoral vote more accurately reflect the statewide vote. Under the current winner-take-all system, one candidate automatically gets all of the state's electoral votes, even if he or she doesn't win a majority of votes on election-day. Instead, Alabama's electoral votes should reflect all candidates who have widespread support, not just the candidate who gets as few as one more vote than another.
This proposal may motivate more people to vote because the votes of more Alabamians will be represented in the Electoral College. Under the current system, eligible citizens may not bother to participate in elections if they believe that their vote will have no impact on the outcome, especially voters not affiliated with a political party or in a political party very likely to lose the election.
Alabama would no longer be "fly-over" country. It has been often argued that Alabama will likely become the least influential state in presidential elections because our current nine electoral votes will almost always be split 5-4. On the other hand, Alabama would be the first state to return to a truly representative system for Presidential Electors and would be able to lead the United States in badly needed reform. We need to lead in this reform and other states will follow! Continuing a poor political precedent ensures that no one will ever fix it.
We are already running this television commercial in various locations in Alabama. Only with your contributions can we can increase the airtime this message receives.
If you are not already convinced, please view the commercial to see how your money will be spent.
Please act quickly, as this legislative season is drawing to a close. In addition to our bill, an alternate version has already passed though committee, and the sponsor has agreed to our amendment to make the wording of the two bills the same. It is now time to influence the legislators and citizens of the state. For that, we need your help to buy more airtime.
With your immediate assistance, we can work together to change Alabama from a red state to a red, white, and blue state.

Note: If you are not from Alabama, but are one of the majority who supports national electoral reform, please assist us by supporting our efforts to advance a bill which can help set the stage to reform election laws nationwide with your generous contribution to Independent Alabama.
