So it's lazy hot Summer Sunday...and I got to thinking about the irony of Karl Rove's situation. Good time to put on my tin foil beanie. So be warned..just put this in the category of "I can't prove anything...but I deep down inside I am convinced that...
Anyway, I bet that at the time Karl Rove was talking to Matt Cooper that he (KR) didn't think his actions were any big deal. I bet Mr. Rove offers reporters damaging innuendo under "deep cover" whenever he thinks it will suit his political aims. I suspect that using half truths and denials for political gain comes as naturally as breathing to him.
Hell, this guy was part of the gang that lied us into an entire war. When a report that questioned the reasons for going to war was published, the job of casting suspicion on the report and its writer was just one small part of another day at the office.
Now Karl and the WH gang find themselves up to their eyeballs in a special investigation over what they viewed as a garden variety act of media manipulation. They tried to blow right past the press by denying any involvment (Remember Sotty McLellan smiling and saying "Ridiculous"?). These guys have such hubris that they probably thought they got away with it.
But...it just won't go away. As the story becomes more and more public, no amount of spinning seems to be helping. Since denying any involvement was proven to be false, Rove and his defenders have consistently tried to minimize the seriousness of his act. They have floated stories the Valerie Plame was not really covert, and they have been trying desperately to make the controversy about Joe Wilson.
For the first time since they came to power though, they have not been able to redirect the message. This everyday lie actually has some of the press and some of the public opening their eyes to the dishonesty if the WH gang. How ironic that an administration that lied about so many big things (WMD!! Mushroom cloud! We gotta invade Iraq now!)) gets tripped up by an ill placed innuendo about a reporter.
