Bush is desperate. He is in the final stages of his gambling addiction (did he replace alcoholism with gambling)? He's already gambled away the surplus, the economy, his reputation as a resolute leader, his reputation for honesty. Now with only a few chips left, he is wagering that he can make the difference in the Virginia governor's race.
So this is what it comes down to. The wreckless cowboy is coming out, guns blazing, in an attempt to swing Virginia to his party's side. Normally, it would not be so difficult to carry Virginia, a Southern state that votes reliably Republican. But after five years of cronyism and incompetence, things are not normal, and even red-staters are catching on.
Today, in Virginia, Jerry Kilgore is going to get killed. And Bush will be officially classified as having been relegated to permanent lame duck, radioactive status. Bush will get the blame for Kilgore's loss, and very few republicans will want to be associated with Bush anymore.
