It seems Canadian security/transportation officials do not take seriously the U.S. government's "security" steps associated with the upcoming Superbowl. Surprise, surprise...
As it has done for just about every sporting event short of Rush and Daryn's bedtime frolics, the Bush Assministration will impose a temporary flight restriction (TFR) over the Ford Dome in Detroit in anticipation of "protecting" the airspace from a terra attack by air.
There's a small problem, though, which I'll explain on the flip.
The problem is that the Ford Stadium is very close to the Canadian border and Canadian airspace. So, instead of the more-or-less standard 10- and 30-nautical mile radius "no-fly" zones (the actual requirements are pretty detailed ... and onerous) around the site, the TFR established will stop at the Canadian border. Which will allow Canucks to fly within 2 nm of the stadium during the game.
This image illustrates the shape of the TFR covering this year's Superbowl.
Never mind that no one has offered up news of any "chatter" regarding a new terra attack. Never mind thet we've been at "yellow" since before the 2004 election. The U.S. must establish a TFR because ... well ... them's the rules.
Of course, Canada may impose their own airspace restrictions before the game is played. But it's more than a little interesting (to me, anyway, since I'm a pilot and have followed this nonsense closely since 9-11-01) that Canada refuses to play this little game.
Oh -- one other thing: The Ford Stadium is domed stadium; a large, heavy, fast airplane could certainly penetrate its roof, but the airspace's dimensions aren't large enough to give any military forces enough time to shoot down a large plane. A small one will simply bounce off the roof, and smack some tailgaters in the parking lot.
Why does Canada hate America? Is it because they're as fed up with Bushco's bullshit as the rest of us? Or, do they simply refuse to live in fear, preferring to get on with their lives?
