I got the news today - I'm to be called up for a year of active duty. I'll be reporting to Mobile Security Squadron Two - the active duty counterpart to the reserve unit I'll officially report to tomorrow. I'll actually get mobilized sometime between January and April (exact dates not settled yet).
The good news is that my duty station will be Portsmouth, VA, which is only a couple hours drive from my house, and while there's likely to be some overseas time involved, it should only be for a few weeks now and then. So I'm a lot better off than some. I probably won't need to dodge too many bullets in Portsmouth.
I'll be, as our buddy Rush L. might say, a "staff puke", doing behind the scenes support for our forward deployed detachments, which will be embarked in Maritime Prepositioning ships to provide security. Doesn't make for a very exciting "what did you do in the war, Daddy?" story, but oh, well. Professionals study logistics, and all that.
So wish me luck - I'll be here intermittently before and during the deployment.
