What does "winning the south" mean?

I'm curious, we seem to obsess about whether a Democrat can "win the south."

Does that mean carrying every Southern state?

Carrying 2/3rds?

Half?

A couple?

If Dean can carry Florida, Arkansas, and West Virginia, has he "carried the south" ?

Do we really care about carrying culturally conservative South Carolina? Or Texas?
