The Dean campaign is to have a vote of its members...all 600k(!) of them, to ask if will accept/reject the matching funds.
I am writing to place the most important decision of this campaign in your hands. We need to choose whether we will decline federal matching funds or accept them.
I'll be blunt. Whoever in the Dean campaign thought of doing this is a damn genius. It was a potential political landmine, rejecting the matching funds. But what can the other Dem candidates say? Dean can just say, well, the average people who support me overwhelmingly told me to reject the limits. What can the other candidates say?
From the Dean site, apparently they've raised VERY close to 45 mil already. It makes no sense for them to stop now, to be honest. I actually think they are trying to take the money issue..which is a potential negative, and make a big positive out of it. "Hey look! We have X much money and the average donation is less than 100. Look how much support we have!"
Just brilliant.
