I have been horrified as after the election, the war in Iraq only grows worse. During Vietnam, it was hard to have a waking moment without visions of villages being napalmed. I was so angry I couldn't bear to have America making war on villagers in a third world country. The anti-war movement was, along with the civil rights movement, one of the greatest popular outpourings in our history. It helped in a small way restore our honor as a moral nation.
When veterans joined the anti-war movement, as they so movingly said, they reclaimed their humanity that had been taken from them by liars and manipulators in the government.
In all our talk of values, lets start with one: it is immoral to invade a country and kill its inhabitants.
Morality is not about the small stuff. The unmitigated use of overwhemling force against a native population in Iraq one of the greatest moral crimes of our age. This war is not against those who attacked us on 9-11. I feel history will judge this as one of America's darkest hours.
The American government and media are on a campaign to sanitize the Iraq war. They will sanitize Fallujah and sweep away the dead civilians before they let anyone enter the city. We must oppose this.
This war is full of American atrocities and war crimes. The tragedy is that we have no reason to be there.
Iraq did not attack us. So why are we destroying cities, preventing aid from reaching populations, shooting people in cold blood!
With all due respect to our troops, who are not responsible for their bad commanders, we also have to call war crimes war crimes! We have to call murder murder! We have to say this is not America.
Our moral values are pretty much worthless unless we start here.
