Another Santorum Lie

In Thursday's Senate hearings, Rick Santorum said that the only problem the Republicans have with the filibuster is that it allows the Minority to block a nominee.  He insisted that there was nothing wrong with the Democrats holding up Priscilla Owen in committee at the time because the Democrats were in the Majority at the time.  He further argued that no Republican would have any objection to the Democrats' holding the Owen nomination in committee.

This is, of course, a paraphrase, because I haven't been able to find transcripts or videos of the remarks.  If anyone has either of these, please post.

I was curious to see whether this was true, so I ran a few LexisNexis searches.

Here's what Rick Santorum said at the beginning of 2003, just as the new Republican Majority was taking control of the Senate (1/5/03, Interview with Tony Snow, Fox News Sunday):

SNOW: When the Senate reconvenes, should it take up nominations that did not make it through the Senate Judiciary Committee for Judges Charles Pickering and Priscilla Owen?

SANTORUM: Well, the president has to, as you know, the president has to renominate them in the new session.

SNOW: The nominations, yes, but the nominations are still alive. He didn't withdraw them. Should he put them before the Senate?

SANTORUM: I think, certainly in the case of Priscilla Owen, there's no question that he should put Priscilla Owen -- what was done to her was really unconscionable.

And I would argue that he should do the same for Judge Pickering.
