Article II, section I, Clause 8 of the United States
Constitution states:
Before he enter on the Execution of his Office, he shall take the following Oath or Affirmation:--"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
Our elected leaders swear an oath to it. Preserve, protect, defend. That isn't happening now is it? What about the rest of us? The preamble says as much in "We the People", but the Constitution has already been ordained and established. So what do we have? A mere pledge to the flag? Who does this regularly besides our children? Seems a bit disparate to me. Regardless of whether you follow a strict or more generous interpretation, there's no doubt it is a, if not
the, living document. we need to remind ourselves just exactly what best represents this country.
Sure, it may not make an awesome bumper sticker or fit onto a ribbon, but I'm choosing the Constitution. This continuing assault on the Judiciary proves that the Constitution is in serious jeopardy of becoming just another "historical document". So I propose, that instead of having our children pledge allegiance to the flag, how about have them, and ourselves, pledge allegiance to the Constitution. Something like this:
I pledge allegiance to the Constitution of the United States of America, and to the Republic which develops thereof, one nation, irrespective of our Gods, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
Can we get our representatives not only to remember, but abide by their oath and stop destroying our checks and balances?
