If confirmed, the selection of Ibrahim Jafari, currently deputy president, would put the United States in the position of providing the armed might to support an Islamist administration in the Middle East.
It would also be the first Shiite-led government in Iraq's modern history, promising easier relations with Iraq's neighbor Iran.
As part of the compact, Iyad Allawi, the current U.S.-backed prime minister would be given the important post of minister of defense.

As I guessed yesterday Allawi and Jafari had made a deal to keep Chalabi out of power. The Minister of Defense post also may be strenghened for Allawi to give him more power over Iraq's fledgling military forces. It will be interesting to see how well Allawi and Jafari cooperate with their decision making. The Iraqi Military strongly supports Allawi so hopefully there won't be any real splits.
