A protest song can be a powerful thing. Phil Ochs, the 60s folk singer said, "One good song with a message can bring a point more deeply to more people than a thousand rallies"
It was fun reading the diary about Bush jokes by PLS last Sunday. I'm hoping this diary could do a similar thing. We could share our favorite songs that express disgust for the present administration.
Gathering the songs isn't hard. NPR's
"All Songs Considered": is fun and allows you to listen to samples of some great songs.
There are also many protest songs that are given away for free. One of my favorites is the jazzy "Shame on you Mr Bush" by Jocke Boberg & Janne Palmén (words from Michael Moore's speech). Got it from the rather messy, but useful BenFrank.net.
The Compassionate Conservatives has recorded some old songs with new lyrics. This group has one song which is very relevant today. It mentions the treasonous outing of Valerie Plame Wilson and the revelations of the horror at Abu Ghraib. Notice that the ruin of the CIA agent's cover is blamed on Cheney. Hmmm.
White House Crock
Katie Harris rigged the voting rolls in advance
George and brother Jeb were leaving nothing to chance
The recount started, James Baker stepped in
The Supreme Court voted to let Bush win
What a crock... everybody it's a crock
Constitutional process blocked and now we've got the White House crock
Bush was in the classroom when he heard the news
Took him eight months to admit there were clues
The Pentagon's a target and the towers fell down
But Cheney kept the fighter jets on the ground
What a crock... everybody it's a crock
Everybody's in a state of shock dancing to the White House crock
Cheney said Iraq was building nuclear bombs
But Wilson went to Africa and proved him wrong
Cheney took revenge by outing Wilson's wife
He wrecked her career and risked her life
What a crock... everybody it's a crock
It's treason to reveal a NOC, just another White House crock
Colin Powell tried to make the case for war
He showed an empty tube and told us what it was for
He knew it was a lie but he pressed ahead
And now his reputation is left in shreds
What a crock.. everybody it's a crock
Everybody's in a state of shock marching to the White House crock
Dubya told the UN to show some spine
We gotta get Saddam and stop wasting time
Germany and France both said "Nix Nix"
"We take our orders from Hans Blix"
What a shock... yeah, Bush got a shock...
Some people on this small blue rock don't listen to the White House crock
Dubya decreed that war must go on
He dressed up like a pilot and said we won
But the weapons weren't there and troops started to die
Mission Accomplished was a big fat lie
What a crock... everybody it's a crock
Iraq was gonna be a cakewalk... instead we got the White House crock
Then we got the photos from Abu Ghraib
"Just a couple bad apples" is what Bush said
But this is no fluke, it's a full-blown plague
Send Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld to The Hague
What a crock... everybody it's a crock
Dubya's head is on the chopping block still spewing out the White House crock
Slime and slander... gerrymander
Obfuscation = Terror Nation
Texas Traitor = Fake Dictator
Mideast Loiter = Schadenfreude

An excellent site for getting songs is Topple Bush. It gives clear instructions for downloading and has background about the songs. My favorite there is "Wartime President" using the tune from a children's song and featuring the guest singer, GW Bush!
(Awww, shucks, doesn't he look cute singing in his bow tie?)
Another site with lots of links to songs is Anti War Songs, à la Carte.
Sea Lion Records, has free downloads of some songs. My favorite is "Cowboy President".
While "Imagine" is my favorite from The Party Party, "Dick is a Killer" is pretty funny.
How about you other Kossacks? What sort of rebellious songs do you like?
