One of the only intelligent proposals Bush has ever made is curbing farm subsidies in his recent budget. It's a
contraversial move, but one that has support from important Democratic groups.
The problem with farm subsidies is that the majority of the benefit does not go to small family farmers, but mega-farms as well as cooked-up "partnerships." These subsidies also unfairly hurt small farmers throughout the world.
Unfortunately, the Democratic Party has just launched a call to action which while rightly asking supporters to oppose the budget in general, also wrongly cites the subsidy reform as part of the problem.
We should be on the side of promoting fairness and opportunity, not reinforcing entrenched interests. We should not oppose farm subsidies reform.
