Last rankings: 1) Dean, 2) Clark, 3) Gephardt, 4) Edwards, 5) Kerry, 6) Lieberman, 7) Braun, 8) Kucinich, and 9) Sharpton.
1.
Howard Dean
Stalling in Iowa while Gep gains momentum, but opening a wider lead in New Hampshire. His national numbers improving vs. Clark, so perhaps he has weathered that storm. AZ numbers look good. Otherwise a quiet few weeks.
2.
Wesley Clark
Organizational problems still appear to linger, but running a tighter ship since those first two chaotic weeks. Post-announcement buzz has receded a tad, though still strong in most national polls. NH polls indicate he could/should take third in that primary -- a huge boost heading into his make-or-break state of SC. Money and time problems forced a public withdrawl from Iowa.
That aside, he gets a "down" arrow for being sick the past week or two. The lack of campaigning is particularly problematic for Clark, as he has a lot more ground to make up.
3.
Dick Gephardt
Has retaken a sliver of a lead in Iowa. Though not an authoritative lead, it beats trailing Dean. His debate performances have been solid. His attacks on Dean, whatever their merits, are effective. Still racking up union endorsements, though the two biggest (AFSCME and SEIU) still elude him. Trade issues becoming increasingly salient in this election. Getting good media.
I've said it before -- Gephardt's campaign team is the only one that can rival Dean's. They're good, and the fact Gep is still in it (after getting hit with the Dean juggernaut) speaks volumes.
Gep is nipping at Clark's heels.
4.
John Edwards
Independent polling confirm his lead in South Carolina, though without the cushion his internals claim. He's rising slowly but steadily in both Iowa and NH. His national numbers, however, continue to lag.
5.
John Kerry
Continues to fade everywhere, but most importantly in his must-win state of New Hampshire. If he can't garner support in his home media market, he won't compete anywhere else.
6.
Joe Lieberman
Pulled out of Iowa. Fading in just about every single poll. Gets no love in any of the early states. Arizona, his biggest hope for a Feb. 3 victory has spurned him for Dean.
7.
The others
I quit rating them. They're just background static at this point.
