With about two-thirds of the country counted in a review of votes, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador of the Partido de la Revolución Democrática (Party of the Democratic Revolution) led coalition has a 2.6% lead over the Partido Accion Nacional's (National Action Party) Felipe Calderón. Preliminary results on Sunday night had him losing by 0.6% or almost 300,000 votes...
Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador leads the Mexican presidential election after a recount of 62.6 percent of ballot results, the Federal Electoral Institute said.
Lopez Obrador of the Party of the Democratic Revolution had 37.1 percent of the vote while Felipe Calderon of the ruling National Action Party had 34.5 percent, according to the institute, which is posting the numbers on an electronic board at its headquarters in Mexico City. The institute began the recount this morning to determine the winner of the country's closest ever election.
Now the caveats. There's no way of knowing what parts of the country have been counted in the 62.6% of ballot results. However, I did some quick math based on the total numbers from sunday night. If I'm right, Lopez Obrador has about a
700,000 vote lead with about 16 million votes to still count. I know Mexico has 300 Election Districts. I wonder if they're going in order from 1 to 300 or however they're organized?
Also, the 2.5 million votes that were "set aside" & excluded on Sunday night are supposedly being included in this review. So maybe that's the difference? However, Mexico's Federal Electoral Institute claimed that if you considered those votes it would still result in a Calderon victory.
The Mexican markets seem to see which way the wind is blowing...
Mexican stocks fell the most in more than three weeks on concern that a recount of ballots may show presidential candidate Felipe Calderon lost the July 2 election.
The Bolsa index fell 814.87, or 4 percent, to 19,514.62, its steepest drop since June 12, led by America Movil SA, Latin America's biggest mobile phone company. Elsewhere in Latin America, Brazil's Bovespa fell 989.31, or 2.7 percent, to 36,378.03.
I will
update the diary as results keep coming in...
