Given Dean's accumulation of super-delegates, as well as his steady pickup of primary ones, could his real plan be the convention dealmaker? Under this scenario, it would definitely make sense for him to stay in the race - his support has been a steady 20% throughout - enough to tip the race one way or the other. Come convention, he could basically name his administration post. Electoral realities will preclude his VP bid, but any other office would be his for the taking. HHS Secretary? Surgeon General? Am I missing a better office (Sec State even, if he stands tough)?
Dean has stood for two real positions - universal healthcare and balanced budgets, along with the vote-snagging war oppo. The candidate who can best fulfill those Dean positions will be the nominee.
Everyone says Dean is out. IMHO, he has real power and would be a fool to withdraw. But I don't think we have to tell Howard that.
