Kate Michelman turns out to have better sense than those supporting her run as an independent in the Pennsylvania Senate race against Santorum and Casey. An article in today's
Philadelphia Inquirer, reports that Michelman has decided not to run afterall and for exactly the same reason many of us, though certainly not all, here at dkos have given: she wants Santorum out:
"Despite profound and fundamental differences, I have decided that Pennsylvania will be better served by electing Bob Casey to the U.S. Senate than giving his opponent another term," Michelman wrote in an op-ed to be published in The Inquirer on Sunday. "I do this knowing that I may forever regret not responding one more time to the clarion call of principle."
Hallelujah!!! The idea that it's better to be practical and win rather than principled and lose won out. As admirable as it is to stand on principle, losing doesn't help the cause. It's the political equivalent of holding your breath 'til you turn blue except that political death, not just anoxia, is often the result.
"The political calculation outweighed the issue calculation," said G. Terry Madonna, a political science professor at Franklin and Marshall College. "She would badly divide the Democratic vote, particularly in the Southeast, where I think the election will be won or lost."
Good show, Kate! Looking forward to the op-ed piece.
