A few weeks ago I signed up over at
del.icio.us. Del.icio.us is a community tags forum that allows you to save your internet bookmarks on their server, and tag them with the keywords of your choosing.
The possibilities of this approach are many. You can see how people catalog the things you catalog. You can see what people associate with tags that interest you. You can see what people are tagging in real time. And you can track most of this via RSS Feeds. This is way cool, and I have begun my own little attempt to manipulate it.
Since the Republicans have so much power at the moment, and since their handling of Terri Schiavo and the bankruptcy legislation so reeked of hypocrisy, I decided to try and use del.icio.us to permanently associate the word "republican" with the word "hypocrisy".
I am but one, but perhaps Kossacks are legion? Make the jump to help pull this off.
So, how to manipulate the
del.icio.us system? I'm not even sure it is possible due to the scale of the whole thing, but I'm willing to try. Are you?
Here's how we can all do this:
- Browse the web. Check.
- Come to an article that touches on an example of the myriad forms of Republican Hypocrisy
- Punch your del.icio.us bookmarklet
- Change the description and title if you want, but the important piece is to tag the link with the words "typical", "republican", and "hypocrisy", along with whatever OTHER tags you prefer.
Now, if a number of folks do this regularly for a couple of days, rather than just myself, perhaps progress can be made.

One of the nice things about this combination, is that while "republican" has no associated tags in its list, "republicans" has many. If we use "republican" instead, we might be able to make "typical" and "hypocrisy" the very first associated tags listed =) Already, "republican" is listed as associated with "hypocrisy" (I'd like to think I helped make that happen). Let's try and make the opposite true as well.
Childish? Perhaps. Fleeting? Probably. Accurate? You're damned right, it's accurate.

Once you sign up over at del.icio.us you can put some bookmarklets in your browser to make it easier for you to add a site to del.icio.us when you're browsing the web. You get to a page, want to bookmark it, click your bookmarklet and voila, you are at the del.icio.us page ready to type in your description and your tags. It's all well-documented and quite easy.
