John McCain spent some time campaigning in NH for Bush in the last couple weeks. Why exactly he would do this is anyone's guess. If we just look for answers in the realm of the imaginable, perhaps Bush is threatening his grandchildren or dog in some way, or perhaps he woke up with a severed horse head one morning. Those are some of the likely possibilities. The unlikely possibilities include the idea that he actually believes Bush is a good president. C'mon, John McCain is a smart guy, so we'll go with the horse head.
But McCain, a veteran, a POW, a tough guy won't be bullied forever. One of these days, we fantasize at least, he'll be like Samson. They've humiliated him and chained him up. But he's surely got in him one moment of monumental hulking out to come! Like Samson, if he really tried, he as much as anyone could pull down the whole structure and crush the radical Republicans under the weight of falling pillars.
How would he do that? Perhaps come out about August or September for John Kerry. Assuming here Kerry gets the nomination, what a terrific thing it'd be for fellow Vietnam vet McCain to endorse Kerry. First, rip Bush several new ones. Second, denounce the go-along see-no-evil Republican Congress. Third, stand with Max Cleland and by then thousands of other veterans, notably Vietnam vets, Democrats and Republicans. Fourth, campaign his heart out for John Kerry. Lots of patriotic (actually patriotic, not the current pretend-patriotic) Republicans would follow his lead. Fifth, be the Secretary of Defense or something big in a Kerry administration.
I like to think McCain is feigning loyalty to this present corrupt, criminal regime. And that when the time is right, he'll do what he can to make things right.
