The war for Iran is already on. That is why Rumsfeld has not been forced out of office, he's planned the next step and no-one else wants to take responsibility for the next step. Indeed, it is likely that the core planning has always involved a war in Iran before 2008. Why do these assholes always talk about a long war? Well, it's part of their plan. I don't exactly know what is going on in their minds, but the talk going on right now is more than sabre rattling. The US has laid down terms that Iran will not submit to. Iranian refusal to dismantle their nuclear programme will result in an Invasion. That is a fact.
Both sides are gambling though. Bush may see the invasion of Iran as the cap stone of his legacy. Bush could conceivably refuse to throw the dice (did anyone find out that he has an undiagnosed gambling compulsion yet?) and the choice is his because noone in the US is serious about stopping his strategy. However Iran is now in a position where they WILL NOT back down. The Iranian leadership perceives that the US campaign in Iraq is bogged down and they fancy they could survive an assault, then direct a successful glorious guerrilla campaign. The Mullahs are gambling that they will survive as a leadership class come hell, the US Army or high water.
