OK, many Americans are selfish and shortsighted. They have short memories. But, you know what? I'll bet they remember that they were better off 8 years ago, even if the media tells them otherwise. You know something else? Americans love a motto. They love a rallying cry. So, I, Ultrageek, humbly offer the following motto for the Democratic party for 2006, 2008 and until this country gets back on track again.
Ready?
Here it comes!
REMEMBER THE MIDDLE CLASS
Many Americans may secretly, or not so secretly, believe that they are the pre-rich, that tax cuts for the rich will benefit them, because, someday, they, too, will be rich. And maybe some of them will. But mostly they won't, because the people currently in charge of our nation, that being the Republicans, don't want the many to do well. That's the Democrats. The Republicans want a small upper class, and a large lower class. And nothing in between. That's why the jobs that are created, as Bonddad so rightly pointed out, make a barbell; people can be rich or poor, but not in between. And, owning a store that caters to the middle class, let me tell you, there are fewer and fewer members of the middle class every day.
But, when I was a kid, everybody wanted to be middle class. Even the rich claimed that they were "upper middle class". Doctors, lawyers, architects, people who were much better off than auto workers and plumbers, claimed to be "upper middle class". Well, with the information technology and manufacturing jobs going offshore, will accounting be far off?
Soon, there will be millionaires, and people asking if you want fries with that. And that's the future the Republicans want. And, now that they've been in power, it's really obvious that this is just plain true.
REMEMBER THE MIDDLE CLASS
People whose wages have gone down, people whose Unions have been busted, people who are competing with people half-way across the world for jobs, these people will respond well to a battle cry. Their apathy will evaporate. IF. We Democrats can stand up and say that we're not JUST the party of the poor. We're the party of the Middle Class. And if people like having any disposable income whatsoever, if they don't want to drown in a sea of debt, they're better off working with us. Working. Not just voting. Fuck apathy.
The Republicans like dropping wages. Add abortion and the lack of birth control together and you get babies, and lots of them, and that means more people competing for jobs, and that means lower wages and no Unions.
The Republicans can invoke guns, God and gays all they want. If we can prove to Americans that their wallets are better off with blue than red, we win.
