"Sanctity of Life" doesn't include poor Native Americans

America's second deadliest school shooting happened just this month, leaving ten dead and a small nation of Native Americans grief-stricken and looking for answers. An unarmed school guard and the shooter's grandfather were among the dead, as well as seven classmates of the shooter.

President Bush has been outspoken about protecting life, and the extreme right and the Senators who pushed through a phony bill have been using up their airtime lately for a vegetative woman in Florida.

Where are these people on this shooting? Silence. . . .

The Red Cross has gone to their Minnesotan reserve to offer counseling and support. They have been receiving letters from around the world offering condolences. Two victims of the shooting still remain in the hospital in Fargo, N.D.

Where are these people who want to save someone's life? Where is their sympathy?

Those of us who are Natives are less than a white woman from a battleground state?

Scott McClellan offered a short sympathy note in an informal discussion with reporters not long after the shooting. Otherwise, there's been nothing from the White House.

And let's not forget, not only isn't this important to Bush and the Senators, but that their proposed budget has $100 million in cuts for Native Americans.

I doubt it's that Bush would rather see the Natives wiped out, but it is deplorable how often Natives are relegated to second-class citizens in this country.
