I'd pick the taxman any day! Since when are higher taxes a bad thing? Only when people and corporations in the highest brackets are affected.
Especially if your name is Lee Raymond (CEO Exxon-Mobil) and you just cashed a consumer funded $450 million retirement lottery ticket. Then the thought of Uncle Sam taking an extra 2 million to fund a school (probably in a minority neighborhood) really sounds appalling. A typical re-distribution of wealth scheme from the bleeding hearts of the left, who don't understand capitalism and the altruism it chooses to presume of it's poster boys. Sure Mr. Raymond and others like him will reinvest their profits.... in time and after enough incentive is given to them by the GOP. What they'll do is create some low-level blue collar jobs about 6 months before an election just to get their photo w/ their conservative candidate of choice.
When was the last time we've heard the middle class complain about their taxes? Arguably the middle class and their ability to drive the economy is adversely effected by the high taxes they currently pay. Groups advocating a flat tax get pushed to the margins. In past elections, Democratic candidates (Jerry Brown), and Republicans (Steve Forbes) favored a flat tax. Of course the devil's in the details, especially when defining "earned" vs. "unearned" income; Brown and Forbes were not exactly proposing the same thing!! Generally the "elite", as "W" refers to his base, are against any such overhaul to the tax system, so novelty candidates like Forbes or Brown never win. In the end, only the little people pay taxes to quote Leona Helmsley. And if you want the same "little people" to vote Republican take their focus away from corporate greed, the WalMart invasion that's draining their local economy, the Iraq war that has probably killed or wounded someone close to them, or the manufacturing jobs that have left our country for good. Instead show them a picture of a lesbian couple with a marriage license holding hands while clocking-in for their shift at an abortion clinic. All of a sudden Karl Rove seems like a genius!
