I'm not a big poll-watcher, but here's a blurb from today's NY Times story:
"The sharpest drop in Congressional approval in recent months occurred among Republicans. In February, 54 percent of Republicans said they approved of the way Congress was doing its job; in the most recent poll, that had dropped to 40 percent. Some analysts suggest that Congress is paying the price for months of intense partisan struggle over judicial nominations and the decision to intervene in the right-to-die case of Terri Schiavo."
...Only 40% of the controlling party's rank and file supports Congress....That seems amazing to me... and would seem to reflect the growing split between religious zealots and the more libertarian type Reagan Republicans...
My question for you folks:
Is this an opportunity for Dems to attract some cross-over votes? ... Does this not bode well for potential DLC candidates -- people like Bill Clinton? ...OR, should Dems just forget those voters? we'll run to the left, and we'll just hope those unhappy Republicans will stay home.... Or, maybe those voters dislike Congress, but still support W, so it's not really meaningful...
As a classical liberal democrat, I'm somewhat of a centrist, and would lean toward swing voter inclusion... But what do you guys think?
Thanks!
Hank
