The e-mails have started. The direct-mail ads too. Not to mention the local radio and TV ads. The GOP has started the process of scaring the base into voting Republican in 06 (or scaring them into not staying home and skipping voting altogether).
And what's their message? That if the Dems regain either the House or the Senate in 06, we will immediately begin Subpoenas, Hearings and Impeachment.
I can't help but wonder: in what way does the GOP think this will motivate the base? The ONLY people mentioning subpoenas, hearings, and impeaching Bush are the GOP. Not one Democratic Congress(wo)man has mentioned this, save for Russ Feingold mentioning Censure.
...the rest...
It begs the question... What is the GOP so afraid of? They never dispute the motivations for exploring hearings, or call the potential subpoenas partisan or irrelevant. They don't seem to be reading the poll numbers siting all the Republicans who are upset with Bush's performace either (not to mention their own (and ours to be honest)). They simply say, in an almost Freudian manner, that Bush may be investigated and, once the rubber-stamp GOP is no longer the majority, held accountable for his actions as President.
Remember back to all the Democrats who chastised Clinton for being a bad husband and lying about it? So do I. Very few Republicans have done as much for the laundry list of offenses the Bush Administration has perpetuated. They've hitched their wagons to GW, always supporting him, never dissenting. They've done all this, instead of pursuing the supposed conservative values they were sent to Congress to initiate. Now that Bush's poll numbers are in the tank, they themselves have no record to stand on. They've done nothing for anyone except the rich and their corporate donors. And now it's election time :-)
No Democrat who's been alive for more than six years will be overly joyful at our chances this year. There are still plenty of ways to screw this up, or watch the pitch sail by. But with Bush's poll numbers, the size of government and the run-away defecit, the conservatives just don't look very conservative right now.
Let the GOP talk about subpoenas, hearings and impeachment. Free advertising for us, negative for them, since they've controlled Congress during the Bush presidency. I say we talk about what we can do for the American people. The GOP is sure out of ideas.
