From comments posted on other diaries I've written here, I know there are a few die-hard Alabama Democrats here.
For those of you, I offer this suggestion as something you might consider adding to this weekend's "to-do" list.
Rev. Fred Phelps is an anti-gay activist who travels around disrupting the funerals of soldiers as a way of protesting the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy.
One Alabama woman has decided to fight back, and I intend to be there...
To show her support for Taylor, Deanna Kelly says she is organizing a tribute. She plans to place flag-waving supporters along the roadway when the Taylor's funeral procession passes. Kelly was inspired to take action against Phelps by her husband, who recently returned from Iraq.
Despite my personal feelings about the war, I can't imagine disrupting the funeral of a soldier. Especially for something which has no relationship to the person being honored.
And on a strictly political note, the most effective thing the Alabama Democratic Party could do this week would be to rally everyone they can to attend (details in the article).
It's a way of reminding a primarily Red State that some things are so inappropriate, they deserve a response.
And if, as we claim, we only hate the war and not the troops, then there is no better way to show it.
Update: Changed "anti-guy" to "anti-gay."
