One of the things that always shocks me about GWB is how cocky he is...
I mean, how many times has he stepped up the mic when a statement of substance or humility is called for...
and he'll pull this "cowboy thing,"....
take a moral stand, get all Midland for a moment, and pretty much emote this, "I don't care what you think, this is what I think, and what we're doing" thing....
that being said, he always speaks generously of the other side a little bit. smart.
So, in this post, I'm pulling back and confessing: George W. Bush, like him or not, has real political horse sense.
Because when you really listen to him, you pick up four things:
- He does NOTHING without filtering it through his determination to win reelection in 2004.
- He made `eye contact' with the American public as "commander in chief' and `patriot' after 9/11 and he has not broken that once...(he knows that if he blinks, he's in trouble.)
- He is a President who knows exactly how hard it will be to defeat him in 2004. He is cocky because he can afford to be.
and, finally,
4. George W. Bush knows who brought him to the dance...and he is a master at, on the one hand, maintaining his base, and on the other hand, always giving the swing voter something to make them remember why they liked him in the first place....
Now, our job is to kick him out of office...
and that has to start with understanding his appeal, knowing and admitting his strengths, and breaking though them...
If it was as simple as just "fighting" for Democratic values against a dunce, well....Al Gore would be President right now.
