To Robert Gibbs: Don't Apologize And Get Your Facts Straight

Eight years ago, Sonia Sotomayor gave a speech where she said:

Second, I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life.

And since Sotomayor was nominated, the wingnuttia have seized on that one line, ignoring everything she before and after, to claim that she was saying Latina women are better than white men, and have launched a full out assault, calling her a racist, a bigot, comparing her to David Duke and the KKK.

So, what was the White House's reaction? Watch it:

GIBBS: I, I have not talked specifically with her about this, but I think that, I think she's say that, that her word choice in 2001, was, was, poor.  [...]

Q: In the 2001, speech,  she said because of her experience, she would come to a better conclusion, which to some people ...

GIBBS: Well, Major, that's why I started this by saying I think if she had the speech to do all over again, I think she'd change that word.

Q: How do you know that?

GIBBS: In discussions with people. Thanks, guys!

That's just great. Buy into a rightwing, false talking point and apologize for it. Right down to agreeing with a Fox News reporter that she said she would "come to a better conclusion."

Read the damn speech, Robert and get your facts straight.

And as for what you think she'd say? Let her say it and don't put words in her mouth. Better yet, don't put Rush Limbaugh's word in your mouth.
