The Oklahoman has published a cartoon that is the worst of it's kind since the one with the police and the shot monkey.
How the hell does something like this get into print? If you haven't seen it yet, head over to Huff Po, or better yet, type in "Sotomayor Sombrero" in Google and you will see what is being discussed here. The cartoon features Judge Sotomayor strung up like a pinata, with Obama wearing a sombrero handing out a stick to a bunch of elephants, asking them who wants to be first. The caption on the bottom? "Fiesta Time at the confirmation hearings." Good god. How blatantly racist can something be? Why not have Obama carrying a watermelon under his arm while your at it? Or have the judge eating a taco?
This isn't only racist, it's stupid. Who would think this is funny? Does this cartoonist think he is being clever? Is the cartoonist thinking "Well, she's Mexican, I'm sure people will think it a hoot if I put in some blatant stereotypes." Like any 6 year with a racist upbringing couldn't come up with the same cartoon.
And by the way, the symbols used to demean the judge are traditionally Mexican traditions. Judge Sotomayor was born of Puerto Rican parents in the Bronx, NY, USA. And Puerto Rico, by the way, is also part of the United States. But obviously not a part of the United States that the editors of the Oklahoman consider the "real america."
