One of the hallmarks of the Republicans' stranglehold on our government has been a creeping anti-climate science propaganda war, much of which was aided by ExxonMobil front groups. From Oklahoma Senator James Inhofe's infamous "global warming is a hoax" statement and other diatribes, to the odious Rep. Richard Pombo (CA-11), whose 2002 Earth Day press release (pdf) argued that "[t]here is no evidence of man-made global warming", and that the Endangered Species Act really should be gutted, we have been plagued with some seriously toxic politicians.
So, for both environmental activists and many scientists, last Tuesday's win was especially sweet. The title of an article in the UK Independent says it all:
