The progressive rebellion to the deal is spreading. You can join it by signing our petition in support of the rebels here.
Twenty-one Democratic members of the House have now signed a letter, first circulated by Rep. Peter Welch, stating their opposition to the deal extending the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest 2%. This includes, as Joan blogged, the new leadership of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. The ranks of the opposed will keep growing, as virtually the entire Democratic House leadership--Pelosi, Hoyer, and Van Hollen--doesn’t sound convinced.
The opposition has real life. Sign up to join it here.
Democratic rebellion is spreading in the Senate, too, where a group of Democratic-aligned Senators as diverse as Bernie Sanders, Mark Udall, and Mary Landrieu (!) have expressed opposition. Harry Reid has stated that he doesn't think they have the votes, and changes will have to be made to the deal:
Sen ML Reid asked if Obama tax deal will pass. "No, I think we'll have to do some more work on it"
We can still end the Bush tax cuts. Support the ongoing rebellion by signing up yourself.
