Republican Rep. Mike Castle is Delaware's sole House member, and his entry into this year's Senate race to fill Joe Biden's vacated seat has slotted this seat in the "practically guaranteed GOP pickup" category, especially after Biden Jr. decided to skip the race.
No one has really polled this race except for Rasmussen, yet his own trends look ominous for Castle:
Indeed, the latest Ras poll had Castle under 50 percent -- 47-36 against Democrat Chris Coons. Translate that into reality, and Castle likely has a much smaller lead -- perhaps not so surprising given the strong Democratic tilt of the state. And the supposedly moderate Castle has been voting in lockstep with his House GOP colleagues as he's sought to avoid getting teabagged from the Right in his primary.
But even voting against his constituents interests doesn't seem to be buying him a pass.
Today the Susan B. Anthony List Candidate Fund, a national pro-life political action committee, announced its endorsement of Christine O'Donnell, candidate for U.S. Senator of Delaware.
"Delaware families deserve the pro-life leadership Christine O'Donnell so capably provides," said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of SBA List Candidate Fund. "Unlike her primary opponent who has an explicitly pro-abortion voting record, O'Donnell has expressed her strong determination to be a vocal advocate for women and unborn children in abortion debates on the floor of the U.S. Senate."
"A new women's movement which affirms its original pro-life roots is making its way to the U.S. Senate and O'Donnell is one of its brightest new stars."
It's a late primary, September 14, so plenty of time for the teabaggers to organize in opposition to the supposed GOP moderate. His state still has a strong Democratic bent, and it would serve Castle politically to aggressively move to the center. Yet with conservatives drooling hungrily on his Right flank, he can't give them easy ammunition to fuel his primary opponent.
An unfortunate quandary for Castle, but a welcome opportunity for the Democrats.
