History in the making, and now the Democratic Party's test of how they will be remembered on foreign policy for decades. They will be stuck with polls saying "Republicans better on foreign policy" for another 50 years.
Mubarak is the most tone-deaf man in the universe, willing to pull his country down with him. Between now and the time he leaves many people could die. He just announced he will stay and "die on the soil of Egypt." Obama is in a Lose-Lose. Unless he acts now, decisively, to suspend Mubarak's military aid.
- If Mubarak leaves soon but only after more bloodshed and chaos, Obama will be blamed for "losing" Egypt and fall into the Carter "losing" Iran meme the Neocons already have carved out for him.
-If Mubarak does not leave soon, Obama is stuck with propping up the most hated man in the world now
- IF Obama suspends aid, he didn't "lose" Egypt, he made a Reaganesque decision: "Mubarak take these torture chambers down!"
Number 3 is his best political choice. The Neocons are making fools of themselves...
reduced to trotting out the Muslim Brotherhood for a bogeyman, no one buying. That bunch of old geezers are yesterday's news.
The Egyptian people have amazed the world with their discipline, bravery, eloquence, and true love of freedom. Mubarak said he is going to "save Egypt" from "evil." By continuing to prop up Mubark, we are propping up a man who is obviously insane.
