Have you ever (alleged action) Dr. Ford?

It struck me when listening to questioning of Brett Kavanaugh, that he was asked a string of questions by the GOP’s surrogate female (Rachel Mitchell, Staff Counsel) that sought to reinforce his denials that the alleged incident did not happen.

Here’s the problem: Nearly every question posed to Kavanaugh referred to the accuser/victim as “Dr. Ford”.

It struck me that this may have been a deliberate and calculated way to allow him to emphatically deny, because at the time of the incident, she was not “Dr. Ford”.

What do you think?

(Transcript from Bloomberg)

MITCHELL: Dr. Ford described an incident where she was alone in a room with you and Mark Judge. Have you ever been alone in a room with Dr. Ford and Mark Judge?

KAVANAUGH: No.

MITCHELL: Dr. Ford described an incident where you were grinding your genitals on her. Have you ever ground or rubbed your genitals against Dr. Ford?

KAVANAUGH: No.

MITCHELL: Dr. Ford described an incident where you covered her mouth with your hand. Have you ever covered Dr. Ford’s mouth with your hand?

KAVANAUGH: No.

MITCHELL: Dr. Ford described an incident where you tried to remove her clothes. Have you ever tried to remove her clothes?

KAVANAUGH: No.

MITCHELL: Referring back to the definition of sexual behavior that I have given you, have you ever, at any time, engaged in sexual behavior with Dr. Ford?

KAVANAUGH: No.

MITCHELL: Have you ever engaged in sexual behavior with Dr. Ford, even if it was consensual?

KAVANAUGH: No.

Georgetown to honor Rafik Hariri

Georgetown University will name its newest building after the former Lebanese Prime Minister, Rafik Hariri, who was assasinated in 2005 when a massive amount of explosives was detonated near his motorcade. Twenty-one others died as a result. The backlash from the killing led to the withdrawal of Syrian troops from Lebanon

Letter of announcement from the university president about the naming of the new building for the School of Business is below the fold, including information about the benefactor...

"If you don't support this war, I'm calling you out."

A guy with whom I worked on a large government contract a few years back and I have corresponded over the time since, each taking polar positions on the political spectrum. He's a former special ops guy, now working for something like the 4th time as a security contractor in Iraq. A lot of his multiple recipient emails use damning language to describe the efforts of us progressives to end the (unjust and illegal) war.

I just received an email from him that had a letter from an anonymous special forces soldier, who, in recounting the deaths of two Navy SEALS who were killed on a mission, has some dead-ender language to describe not terrorists, but us.

Below the fold is that letter, without comment, placed here to generate reaction and comment. I understand that Green Berets have reasons to keep their identities secret, but even though I received this from a former Green Beret, my Snopes detector is tingling.

Join me will you...

Pick Your Prez - online candidate quiz

A former colleague who is ex-military and who has spent many months in Iraq doing contract security work sent this link.

It is an 11-question quiz designed to let you know whom you SHOULD vote for for president in 2008.

I'm leaning strong towards Edwards and the results surprised me a bit, but because of the lack of nuance in the up/down, black/white, for/against nature of the questions and choices for answers, I'm not surprised.

There also is no way to factor in such things as a voter's opposition to the idea of political dynasties, the gulf between a candidate's beliefs and his/her actual voting record, and a way to verify the pro/con positions ascribed to the top contenders.

Link after the fold...

Anti-war march in DC this Saturday, 9/29

(Please recommend if you feel that others should see this.)

Right on the heels of the march from the White House to the Capitol comes this event which will reverse the route from 2 weeks ago – this one going from the Capitol to the White House.

The "event" is actually a week-long lead-up to the march, starting with an encampment on the West lawn of the Capitol this past weekend, erecting a giant billboard telling Congress to stop funding the war, activism, rally, and a live concert.

Follow me over the cliff for more details...

This one came to me this morning from a retired Special Forces guy - a guy who told me back in '02, "I didn't vote for Bush. I voted for the people he has on his team." He still is a true believer. An Afgan war vet, a mercernary, a contractor who has gone to Iraq several times, now.

DC Protest - MASSIVE Photo Diary (with definitive diary links collection)

UPDATE: Can you help me, please by RECOMMENDING this diary?

I missed the Kossack Kontingent gathering at Starbucks, because I had to attend my son's basketball game.

When I got off the Metro at L'Enfant Plaza and started walking toward the mall, I gave Rena a call to find out where to meet up. Folks were split up in smaller groups around the mall and the plan was to meet at quarter til 1pm at the corner of 7th and Madison, then head towards the march start point shortly afterwards.

Follow me after the fold, will you, to experience PART 1 of the day through the eye of my camera, beginning with the Metro ride in at 11:15am, and ending just as we finally start marching at 2:30pm...

SCARY GEORGE ALLEN!!!

A very creative home owner on the main thoroughfare in Falls Church, VA (a very blue city) created this Halloween display, which gave me a wonderful opportunity to explain to my 4-year-old why George Allen is "Very Scary". Now he points it out every time we drive by, which is what I was doing when I took this shot this morning:

Scary, ain't it? Note the noose he's holding and the Confederate flag on his jacket (and as pointed out below, the macaque).

The Great Spelling Controversy!!!

I admit it. I'm a bit of a pedant. And, it has caused some friction in my life.

I went to Catholic elementary school overseas and had grammar, spelling, and punctuation beat (sometimes literally) into me. Even then, I won most spelling bees in school.

I then transitioned to public school here in Northern Virginia - some of the finest schools in the country, as statistics would tell you. But, my classmates were considerably behind in those skills. Still, teachers appeared to make an effort to help them improve.

THE META SPELLING ERROR LIST FOLLOWS...

Photo Diary: IMPEACH V.3.0

I had three pre-painted 5-foot signs burning a hole in my trunk, so I decided to slap them up last night for the benefit of Northern Virginia commuters and their morning commutes.

Two were deployed inside the Capital Beltway on Interstate 66 at Great Falls Street - one for eastbound traffic and one for westbound traffic.

The third was a new idea - attach it to a different kind of barrier and on a non-interstate artery. This one went over Rt. 50 (Arlington Boulevard) at 7 Corners in Falls Church.

All three were standing at noon today, so all morning commuters traveling in those locations saw them, presumably. By 1pm, the Rt. 50 one had been violently ripped down. That's the nature of freeway blogging - ephemeral.

Below the fold is a montage of images I took of the signs while driving...

Mike Wallace was just on NPR's Diane Rehm show, and boy was it good!

He's doing PR for his book (and DVD) of videos from his long career as a journalist and media personality. Lots of juicy stuff, both personal and political in this piece.

87 years old! Wow!

Yesterday, I was out at the Fairfax County Government Center dealing with a minor issue (why the hell do make you travel to the westernmost edge of the county?) and noticed a sign about absentee voting.

So, after paying my personal property tax and getting my vehicle decal (those of you who don't have to do this are so lucky - even with the "tax relief" we got that killed potential transportation improvements revenue, it's still a bite), I hopped upstairs to the elections office.

I told the woman I might be out of town on November 8th and could I have an absentee ballot. She handed me a request form and told me that I could vote while I was there. So, I filled it out and walked into an adjacent room to find...

more after the flip-flop...

Bennett resigns over racist remark flap!

Just saw this over at Raw Story:

MCLEAN, Va., Oct. 3 PRNewswire -- K12 Inc. today announced that William
J. Bennett has resigned as an employee, and as Chairman and member of the
company's Board of Directors, effective immediately. K12 Inc. said the Board
accepted his resignation, thanking him for his contributions to the company.
K12 Inc. said that it has no relationship with, or involvement in, Dr.
Bennett's radio program. The opinions expressed by Dr. Bennett on his radio
program are his and his alone.
Dr. Bennett, in a separate statement said: "I am in the midst of a
political battle based on a coordinated campaign willfully distorting my
views, my record, and my statements. Given the controversy surrounding the
remarks I made on my radio show, I am stepping down from my positions at K12,
so that neither the mission of the company, nor its children, are affected,
distracted, or harmed in any way."

Yeah, it's the evil Left Wing Conspiracy that tricked you into saying that, Bill. Sure.
DC Protests - What's in a number? (POLL!!)

UPDATE #2: New video located that shows not only the HUGE crowd on Constitution Avenue (not even at the starting point, yet), but also a snippet of a Kos bandana being worn by MSOC's husband/photographer, as he crosses in front of the AP cameraman trying to capture Cindy Sheehan and Jesse Jackson. See it Here

UPDATE: Several new images found showing the crowd at the beginning of the march, taken by a wingnut infiltrator, I mean infilTRAITOR:

Honestly - how can anyone really know how many people showed up? I'm sure with some mathematical models and good fly-over pictures, one could extrapolate by taking measurements of one block on a grid, then multiplying by the number of equally populated grids. I believe that's how it has been done in the past.

Following the fold is my first-hand observational analysis and some wild-eyed speculation about the "official" count in the press...

DC Protest MetaPhoto Diary - Part 1

NOTE: After struggling for hours (and a hangover from a party last night) to put this diary together, I'm going to have to go without imbedded images. You can have a Kos window on the left and a Yahoo album window on the right to follow along. Most of the images that go along with this diary are here:

http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/limboigah/album?.dir=/d669

The album I uploaded last night (http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/limboigah/album?.dir=f491) also has shots that enhance the story. This diary corresponds to images "DSCF001.JPG" to "DSCF0044.JPG"

Actually, in 1968, my parents took me and my brothers to downtown Bangkok to show support for Dem candidate Hubert Humphrey, but this was my first by choice.

I will break this up into several diaries, because I have a lot of shots and anecdotes to pass on. Thus begins...

My Protest Diary - Part 1

Cheney going in for elective aneurysm surgery

Oh how the hell do you spell that word?

Just saw it at Crooks and Liars.

Thanks to Duke1983, I can now fluff up my diary to a near turgid state, akin to Cheney's notorious trouser snake (from AP, via Breitbart):

Cheney to Have Surgery Next Weekend

Sep 16 5:26 PM US/Eastern

WASHINGTON

Vice President Dick Cheney will undergo an elective surgery next weekend to treat an aneurism in an artery behind his right knee.

The condition, discovered earlier this year during a routine checkup, needs to be treated "as to not become a problem over time," Steve Schmidt, counselor to the vice president, said Friday.

"The procedure will be performed under local anesthetic," Schmidt said. "It will take place next weekend. It will involve a short hospital stay. The vice president will return to work shortly thereafter."

Schmidt said more details will be announced next week.

The aneurysm is behind his knee. So, sorry, there's no explanation for his madman behavior, at least not from this condition.

South of New Orleans - NOAA overflight pics

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), part of the Department of Commerce, has been conducting overflights of the storm-ravaged region over the past few days. They have put up a website with images taken from approximately 7,500 feet. Here's the LINK to the site.

The devastation shown in some areas takes your breath away. Pictures just north and northwest of the French Quarter in New Orleans not only show the extent of the flooding, but also the iridescent film of toxic waste floating on the surface everywhere - an unimaginable environmental catastrophe. Imagine wading through that stuff! Petroleum, toluene, household solvents, etc... And that's the stuff you can see.

The shots from the Gulfport, MS region are unbelievable. Near total destruction along the coast, going back more than a mile inland, as if the entire stretch was hit with a 300-mile per hour tornado. What caused the destruction, however, was a massive storm surge of between 18 and 23 feet of water - much like the tsunami in South Asia.

Jessica Lynch's friend who died

UPDATE: Some commenters below point out that Dee Dennis is a woman. Whoops. Sorry, Dee. I guess the name should've been my first clue. I've made edits below that maintain my original post...

I've been following the growing discontent, feeding it, feeling solidarity, etc.

I've gotten into the almost hourly-routine of checking Kos, Atrios, Americablog, Rawstory, BradBlog, CrawfordBlog, Truthout, Iconoclast-Texas, et al, so I can stay on top of the latest developments.

Truthout's coverage has been outstanding, thus far. Not only do they have updates throughout the day, they've been posting videos of noteworthy events.

I just started watching a video of families who arrived today. It was shot at Camp Casey 1, right in front of the "Arlington West" memorial. They step up to the mic, struggle to get out the name of their lost loved ones, some making fairly strong anti-war statements.

Up comes a diminutive and portly fellow(ess) with a not-too-deep voice, dark complexion and long black hair.

John Gibson on Bill O'Lielly's show just now

I just heard John Gibson on Falafel Bill's show, and I am so riled up. He started out playing Bush's press conference where he talks about Cindy Shee-HAN and that he understands her right to her opinion and that he gets all kinds of opinions.

Then, Gibson ramps up his attack on Sheehan and follows the playbook laid down by Drudge, Malkin and Anal Vibrator Boy - that Cindy has been "consumed" by those far left types, like MoveOn, Michael Moore, Code Pink and those "gray-bearded long haired men who've been wearing those same T-shirts with doves on them for the last 40 years - always antiwar". He made sweeping generalizations based on where Sheehan is from (between San Francisco and Sacramento) "near Berkeley!" - basically calling everyone in that region radical leftie peaceniks.

Liberal Lips - The Contrast (w/QUIZ!)

Late last week, I posted a diary (LINK) analyzing SCOTUS nominee John Robert's rather thin upper lip, and included cropped images of several dozen conservative and right-wing personalities' lips as an example of the correlation between thin upper lips and conservative ideology.

One of the commenters asked if I could do the same for liberals, Democrats and progressives. Well, I've collected images of folks who fit the bill, edited the images to show only their mouths and now have A NEW QUIZ. See if you can guess who belongs to each of these sets of lips:

Is Roberts a Mystery? Look at the LIP!!

UPDATE 08/01/2005: I've now put up a diary with Democrat/Liberal/Progressive lips as a contrast to this diary. You can see it here.

Over the years, I've noticed that many a conservative politician and pundit seem to have a deficient upper lip. Some could say this is a sign of a "stiff upper lip" and "resolve". I think it's a sign of being uptight - literally, their conservative outlook is reflected in their lip.

By the same token, liberals have fuller, more generous lips. (A college professor I had actually said that research supports this!)

Now when looking at Roberts, examine his lips:

NPR TreasonGate FAQ

My first two diaries have been about Freeper talking points and in both, I ask for suggestions on how to shoot down these perplexingly-effective falsehoods.

I just discovered this resource which is fairly recent, which could be a good place to send folks who need to bone up on the facts.

I like how they report what Rove's lawyer said ("not a target") but also point out why that may be misleading.

Last week, I posted my very first diary (77 comments!) describing a Freeper acquaintance and some Gooper talking points he was circulating.

Well, we've been sparring over Rove-gate, and in the course of these exchanges he has provided snippets of insight into his opinion and beliefs.

Well, I just got a message from him that takes the cake. Not only does he parrot the RNC Talking Point/Lies (now called the "Chewbacca Defense"), but he goes several steps further, adding new smears and smoke screens.

For about a year and a half, I have been having lively exchanges with a person with whom I had minor business dealings, but never met face-to-face. Now, I wouldn't have gotten into such heated arguments with him if he hadn't sent the first email calling Democrats "pigs". All this while we were putting his name forward for a management position for a major government contract. Well, I couldn't let him get away with it, and we've been fruitlessly trying to convince each other of the merits of our respective positions and opinions ever since. I've found DailyKos to be a good source of "ammunition" for this pissing contest.
