"Paul Revere's Ride" by Sarah Palin

So Sarah Palin's summary of Paul Revere's famous ride is making the rounds. No doubt you've seen it:

Paul Revere's, um, Ride for Guns and Stuff

So I figure that since some new information has come to light, thanks to Half Governor Palin, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's famous poem needs to be rewritten. However, in honor of Sarah Palin, I'm not going to finish rewriting all of Longfellow's poem. It only seems appropriate.

Listen, my children and you shall hear...
Well, just what it is, it's not quite clear.
On the nineteenth of April in seventy-five,
Who'd Revere warn on his horseback drive?

From Concord to Boston to Lexington,
The British were warned 'bout touching our guns?
A Tea Party Patriot, armed to the teeth!
...At least in the words of Palin, S. Heath.

The lanterns were lit, no doubt says she,
In the Old North Church—for liberty!
One if by land, two if by sea,
Three if by air, four if by Wii.

Good golly gosh, I'm sure I don't know
Just what's the point of her traveling show.
One thing is clear: you're going to be failin'
If you learn your hist'ry from Sarah Heath Palin.

Burn the Koran—to disk!

With all this talk about people burning Korans today, whether it be Reverend Jones down in Florida or one of his crackpot copycats, I've been bitten by the bug. In order to make up for any Korans that these lunatics might destroy, I'm going to make sure there's at least one more Koran in the world. I'm going to the link below to download the holy Koran in Adobe Reader, and burn a copy—to disk.

Burn a Koran to disk today!

As Henry Jones, Sr. (no relation to Pastor Terry Jones) said in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, "Goosestepping morons like you should try reading books instead of burning them!"

Happy downloading!

Carly Fiorina is running for Senate

She's challenging Barbara Boxer. I doubt there'll be much of a primary. You'd normally expect a hot primary in California, since the shambles of the state Republican party are so ideologically divided, and dominated by the right wing. Fiorina won't campaign as a right winger, but it's reasonable to expect that her money would swamp whatever candidates the party will cough up.

She already seems to know how to get bargains. She made her announcement, for free, in the guise of an opinion piece in the Orange County Register. That's free advertising there. TV ads are usually costlier.

Politics, gay marriage and the English language

In today's "Cheers and Jeers" post, Bill in Portland Maine presented us today with the text of the ballot question that Maine voters are voting on now, as we speak. The ballot question reads, literally:

Do you want to reject the new [Maine] law that lets same-sex couples marry and allows individuals and religious groups to refuse to perform these marriages?

What worries me is that those opposed to marriage equality are better organized than those out there who simply think marriage equality is fair. Thus the opponents' forces will be able to simply send their forces to the polls, armed with information on how to think, while proponents will be more prone to get their wires crossed--like I did, when reading that poll question. Three times. And I've already forgotten whether voting yes or no means supporting marriage equality. Okay, I just read it again: yes means you oppose marriage equality, no means you support marriage equality. Quick! Write that down before you forget it! (Especially if you’re voting in Maine today!)

Why bother voting?

Often you hear people complain that it's not worth voting, that because of the Electoral College, my vote won't make a difference. While it's true that your vote probably won't alter the way your state's electors vote—particularly if you live in a state that always goes for one party or the other—like Massachusetts, New York, Texas or Idaho—all votes still count for something. The Electoral College are the ones who officially make the decision in December, yes, but the voices of the 130,000,000 or so voters do count. After all, while a president can lose the popular vote and still win the presidency, it sure doesn't look good for that president if he gets into office that way.

Shouldn't those kids be in school, Governor Palin?

Every time I see the Palin kids on TV I feel like I'm losing my mind. It's not just because I think their mother could wind up being one of the worst executives in history (though that's certainly part of it.) No, what bothers me is one question: why aren't those kids in school?

Bumper sticker and lawn sign report

If you ask pretty much anybody if bumper stickers and lawn signs sway their opinions of a candidate, they'll probably say no. I would. And maybe that's accurate.

At the very least, no one is probably aware of these campaign fixtures' influence on them. However, they're a good, unscientific gauge of enthusiasm for candidates in a particular area.

Clinton backers who won't back Obama: what's to worry?

There's a lot of talk about whether the Hillary Clinton supporters are going to back Barack Obama by sufficient numbers. Polls seem to show they've already moved to back Obama by anywhere from 50% to 70%, which sounds pretty dire, but I'm not convinced that it really is.

I'll preface this by saying that I'm very pleased that Barack Obama chose Joe Biden as his running mate, and that Biden had been one of my top preferences until he became my utterly top preference a couple of weeks ago. So I don't regret that he was picked.

Who's the conservative scapegoat after San Francisco?

Time was when John Birch Society-type conservatives wanted to demonize the political left, they zeroed in on Berkeley, California—but that wild college town failed to capture their interest after a while. After that, they started leaning on New York City as the bastion of modern liberal Babylon. Then the World Trade Center attacks happened. New York is still just as liberal, but attacking it now is un-American.

The first post-identity politics and post-Boomer election

We had a black candidate and a female candidate running, both as serious contenders, but the voters for the most part didn't fall back on identity politics. Obama, as part of the post-Baby Boom generation, understood that identity politics are a thing of the past, and that they're no way to reach voters. Had he gotten up there on the podium and said, "It's about time we had a black president. Vote for me!" I wouldn't have voted for him. The goal is to look past skin color and gender, which Obama has implored us to do by way of not talking about his race as a reason for running.

So there's been a sudden dust-up surrounding Barack Obama's talk about how his white grandmother confessed that she felt jittery whenever a black man walked near her. Some have taken umbrage to how he referred to his grandmother as "a typical white woman." After he called her typical, he went on to say that she was a person who was made nervous by black men. Obviously this doesn't mean that Obama's suggesting that all white women are nervous around black people, but obviously the right wing is working hard to spin it that way.

I feel a little stiff, but refreshed. I took three Tylenol PMs instead of two. Better not do that again. Those things are strong.

The first thing I did, before picking up a newspaper or turning on the TV, was to jump on the DailyKos to sum up the last year's campaign events. It was pretty clear how things were going to turn out when I drifted off on the night of February 18, 2007, so I might as well recap.

As we all know by now, Willard "Mitt" Romney dropped out of the presidential race today because he wanted to make sure the leading Republican got a clear shot at keeping the White House in the Republicans' hands and not the terrorist dupes who are working hard to win it back. Obviously Willard's dropping out is going to have an effect on the Republican race, effectively making John McCain the Republican nominee, but will his effect have any effect on the Democratic race?

Delegate count: Obama leads in New Hampshire?

Okay, I'll pull no punches and I'll come right out and make it clear that I am not nor ever have been a Hillary Clinton supporter, fancier or even much of a tolerater of her. However, the TV told me that tonight she won the New Hampshire primary by 3%, more or less, and I believe it, in spite of what all the polls—even Clinton's internals—said. Well done, and I'll see you and your supporters at the next contest.

But apparently Barack Obama has scored 12 delegates from New Hampshire, while Hillary Clinton has 11 (and John Edwards has 4,) according to CNN's Delegate Scorecard. Now sure, a victory's a victory, and I'd rather see Obama have more delegates, but what's the deal here?

Horse-trading advantage for Obama

It looks like the Obama's gaining ground in the second-place race. While Edwards generally leads as the favorite second-choice candidate for Iowa caucusgoers, Obama's been picking up recommendations from the back of the pack: "Vote for me first, then vote for Obama if that doesn't work out."

Poll: Having a beer with a candidate.

You often hear people say that voters will go for a candidate whom they'd like to have a beer with for some reason, and that's the way they'll wind up voting. In 2004, slightly more voters seemed to want to have a beer with a recovering alcoholic than a stiff drink with a stiff Democrat—and we wound up with a president who's really someone to drink about!

Away in a WalMart

Here's a Christmas song I wrote a couple of years ago. I wrote the words, but not the music. But you can probably figure that out.

Let's remember those less fortunate than us this Christmas season—and let's remember those who are on the board of directors for the big box giant: remember them because they're the ones who are too willing to forget about you and everyone else.

Sure, all 42 of the people who have sat in the Oval Office have been men. And sure, this is the first time we've had a female in the running who might actually win a major party's nomination (because Shirley Chisholm, Elizabeth Dole and Carole Moseley-Braun never had a serious shot, despite these candidates' varying merits.) But just because a woman has never been president doesn't make the presidency an "all-boys' club."

I was in the World Trade Center's underground plaza half an hour before the first plane hit. My train came in from New Jersey at that stop. I was in the office fifteen minutes before the first plane hit.

We evacuated the building after the second one hit. No one seemed to think anything of it until the second one; it was just a curious one-off. I was stranded in Manhattan until about 4:00, when I finally caught a ferry back across the Hudson River and walked three miles home to the west side of Jersey City.

Presidential bumper stickers.

Last month I drove from Boston to southern New Jersey to Cape Cod and back to Boston on an extended weekend. Along these mostly blue stretches of highway, I saw a number of bumper stickers that were residuals from last year's elections. I saw cars with bumper stickers for Sheldon Whitehouse, Ned Lamont, Ben Cardin, Bob Casey, Peter Welch and Jim Webb. I saw a few old Kerry/Edwards stickers but no Bush/Cheney stickers, and only one other Republican sticker—for Chris Shays. It's nice to see all this action on the part of Democrats and nearly none for Republicans.

Why Republicans fear the YouTube debates

Last week, CNN and YouTube hosted a debate for the Democratic presidential candidates. It featured questions recorded on film by citizens and played live before the candidates, to which they responded. Some of the questions were ridiculous, and the most ridiculous were weeded out beforehand, but overall the result was interesting and received warmly by the candidates and the media. I was on vacation when it aired so I couldn't catch it, but because it was on YouTube, all the footage was made available later online, allowing me to catch up. The wonders of the age!

My letter to Senator David Vitter (R-LA)

Senator David Vitter of Louisiana just had a second madam, this time one in New Orleans, claim him as one of her clients. This madam, Jeanette Maier, went public not to humiliate Vitter but to rail against the DC madam who listed him as a client. Maier said that it was unprofessional to "out" Vitter without pointing out all the good he's done in office. With friends like this, who needs enemies?

This prompted me to read up on Senator Vitter, who in 2004 won his Senate seat campaigning against "Massachusetts values," saying that the Senate needs more "Louisiana values." The brothel scandals got me wondering what "Louisiana values" were, since I'll admit I never would have guessed that Vitter's behavior jibes with them. In fact, I'd think that many Louisianans might not agree that visiting brothels could be classed as a "Louisiana value." But I had to know, and I had to know what was wrong with my values, since I live in Massachusetts. So I wrote a letter to Senator Vitter.

Time Magazine's case for teaching the Bible

Yep, Time Magazine has made its case for the value of teaching the Bible in public schools. Their point is that since so many Americans these days draw on the Bible for inspiration, guidance and general decision-making, it's valuable for the youth of today to know the names of Noah's sons, the events at the banquet of Nebuchadrezzar, and the full text of the Sermon of the Mount. It's just as necessary as teaching kids the Gettysburg Address, no doubt. Blessed are those forefathers who brought upon this continent a new nation conceived in liberty!

At any rate, I think it's a great idea. Many Americans' decisions are indeed influenced by the Bible, so teaching the Bible to schoolchildren is crucial.

Polish joke: Missile defense shield in eastern Europe

Growing up with my grandfather's Polish last name in America in the 1970s had its stresses. Those of you who were around back then might remember that Polish jokes were very much in vogue. I can't say they offended me, but I never really thought of them as funny.

That said, I've just come up with a Polish joke of my own, so please bear with me:

Two Poles are sitting in a bar, discussing world events. "You know," Tadeusz says, "President Bush wants to build a missile-defense shield in Poland."

"That's a good idea," says Wladislaw. "Russia is right there. This shield will protect us."

"Yes," says Tadeusz. "I think it's a good idea, too."

Why fire Imus?

I admit that I've never been a Don Imus fan. I've long been aware of him, but I've never actually listened to his show. All of what I know about him comes from reports from others, or stories I've read about him.

I understand CBS dropping Imus for his "nappy-headed hos" crack. Sure, Imus is a "shock jock," and he's made all kinds of racially charged comments in the past, I understand, so this one isn't really out of character. I guess Imus was following women's college basketball and fired what he imagined was a generic insult at the team he was not rooting for. "Nappy-headed" is a loaded adjective in the black community, which is why so many people are upset. I'll admit that as a balding white guy, it doesn't mean much to me, but commenting on the "nappiness" of a black person's hair does carry a lot of cultural baggage. It's up there with calling a black person filthy and unkempt. As one of the Rutgers' basketball women said, "Nappy? But I comb my hair!" Imus clearly didn't understand what this word really means, just as I'm sure he didn't understand the meaning of "ho," because I don't believe he meant to suggest that these women were sexually loose or crass.

Gonzales hearing "delayed" until April 17?

What the hell is this? An AP article reports that Alberto Gonzales's hearing has been delayed until April 17. But I was under the impression that it was always slated for April 17, and that the Bush administration just wanted it to be moved up earlier. There's no delaying here; it's at the same time it always was.

With the headline and the text of the article reading that Senate Democrats are delaying Gonzales's hearing, it makes it sound as though it's the Democrats who are deliberately trying to slow down justice from moving along. Or am I mistaken about the April 17 date, and that that was always Gonzales's scheduled court appearance? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure I'm not.

WMDs found in Iraq: terrorists and their chemical weapons!

The chemical weapons used by terrorists in Iraq are, specifically, chlorine gas bombs. Granted, these chlorine gas bombs are made from chlorine brought by USUK occupation forces to purify the water, because there's so little potable water in Iraq these days, on account of our having blown up the infrastructure when we attacked Iraq.

According to the BBC, three chlorine gas bombs have killed eight and injured hundreds, including six U.S. troops. Al Qaeda it ain't, but whoever's doing it wouldn't be doing it if we hadn't invaded and occupied the country in the first place.

Mission accomplished.

Supreme Court stops GOP redistricting in Colorado

The Colorado Republicans have appealed to the Supreme Court to allow them to put in place a redistricting map they came up with in 2003. However, since a Democratic state judge had already created a map in 2002, and since that map had been approved by the state legislature while they were still working on a new map, the 2002 map has to stay. Apparently Colorado law permits redrawing district lines only once per decade.

So we've been hearing that Jim Baker has a few recommendations for changing the course in Iraq. I call it progress, and progress raises a song in my heart. So I wrote one. Well, I wrote the words. Someone else wrote the music, some forty years ago. But it's a good song, and I hope you like my words.

MA-Gov: Kerry Healey opposes the U.S. Constitution

In case there are any errant Kerry Healey supporters cruising through this site (and I know you're out there!) I've got something to point out to you about her attacks on Democrat Deval Patrick, whom she regularly says "defended murderers and rapists."

Notice how the Healey campaign is making a big deal over how Deval Patrick "defended" murderers and rapists? When you hear that, what do you think? That Patrick is for murder and rape?

Henry Kissinger is advising Bush on Iraq.

Apparently Nixon's old pal has been advising the Bush administration on how to deal with Iraq, according to Bob Woodward's new book. Excellent choice. I mean, considering what a fantastic job ol' Henry did with Vietnam.
