It was about a duplicitous preacher/serial killer who preyed on widows and killed them. It was based on the book by Davis Grubb, which was based on a real killer. That character’s and killer’s name was Harry Powell. The movie was a film noir classic, and through extensive use of shadows and expressionism created a sense of dread and fear that was like no other in cinema to that date. Reverend Harry Powell talked a good game as a preacher, using religion to win the trust in depression-era West Virginia. He had “LOVE” and “HATE” tattooed on each hand to demonstrate the duality of good and evil. His his preferred weapon was a switchblade. Flash forward to today, and in Alabama you have Roy Moore running for Senate. A fundamentalist Christian, he is openly racist, homophobic (he wants sodomy to be a felony again,) and a Christian Dominionist who wants the US to follow biblical law, not the constitution. He gained fame by fighting to keep a statue of the 10 commandments on the courthouse grounds. It is coming out that his piety is just an act: he is a pedophile who had sex with minors. Several women have come forward accusing him of inappropriate acts, one of them claims he had sex with her when she was 14. This is called statutory rape. Yet this man claims he is a paragon of virtue. What kind of virtuous man is a sexual predator who preys on children? His supporters are either denying it, or excusing it by citing the bible — saying Joseph was in his 30s when he married a teenage Mary. On the other side you have Democrat Doug Jones who also resembles a character from Southern Gothic lore, only a far more redeemable one — Atticus Finch. Atticus Finch should need no introduction: he was the hero of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. A Southern lawyer who defended a black man unjustly accused of raping a white woman. This tale also took place during the depression but closer to the election in Alabama. “A bible in the hand of one is worse than a whisky bottle in (another)” is one of the timeless quotes from this book that still speaks to us today. Like Atticus, Doug Jones is an American hero. Jones prosecuted Thomas Edwin Blanton Jr. and Bobby Frank Cherry, two members of the Ku Klux Klan, for their roles in the 1963 16th Street Baptist Church bombing. Unlike Finch, Jones won the case and both were convicted. This is a man who has always stood up for what is right, despite public opinion. When one sees Jones speak, through the right like you might almost mistake him for Gregory Peck, who played Atticus in the 1962 film. The cadence is there, and the spirit of justice is definitely there. You see a good man, fighting for justice, against an insurmountable task: running as a Democrat in 2016’s Alabama. His words give you hope that we might just win — that good might just prevail against evil. This is hope in a hopeless world, the kind of salve a leper might have felt at the feet of Jesus Christ. So we’re left at what should be a very easy decision for Alabamans: do you choose good or evil? Do you choose the pedophile with a bible, or the man who has fought the good fight against evil? He asked her out and she politely turned him down. So he went and got a really high paying job and came back with a fancy car and asked her to go out with him. “You’re the one for me! Look! I’m rich and I drive a beautiful car!” She still turned him down. So he bought a house near her so he could watch her every move. Every time she left he would be there, asking her out, and each time she would politely refuse. Then he got angry, and he set the neighborhood on fire. This will surely get her to go out with me as she will have nowhere to run. The neighborhood started to burn and so she ran inside her house, scared for her life. Seeing this didn’t work, he proceeded to torch her home. As it caught fire she ran out of it screaming. As she ran he tackled her and gave her a bear hug, crushing her chest. “Now you will have to stay with me forever! Your house is gone, your neighborhood is ash and now you can’t move!” And as the fire collapsed around them both he never let go. -------------------------------------- This is toxic masculinity. This is authoritarianism. This is the mindset of the Harvey Weinsteins, Steve Bannons, Donald Trumps, Anthony Weiners out there. This is how they see the ALL of us. Women, definitely, but it spreads beyond that as well. They don’t simply want to live their lives, they want to coerce others into their control, and destroy them if they don’t. They won’t take no for an answer, and they not content with simply us following them, they want us to WANT to follow them and will destroy us and everyone around us to make that happen. They do not want those under them to simply obey, they want us singing praises loving our obedience. To defeat the enemy, you must know the enemy. And to know the enemy is to know they will burn everything down around them just to maintain their fantasy of control. Saying “no” is the most powerful weapon you have in your arsenal. As Camus said “What is a rebel? His brothers in arms, the evangelical death cult which is so determined to blow up the world because, Jesus, got their man to run as the GOP nomination in the State of Alabama. Roy Moore is a special kind of special – a man so hostile to education that he would prefer that words not in the King James Bible simply not be taught. It gets in the way of that whole sheep like daze his ilk prefers humanity to be in. Side note: Shepherds don’t maintain flocks because they have a fondness for sheep – it’s either their wool or an Irish Stew dinner that motivates them to do their work. And the mad cow of Manhattan, the mango Mussolini, can once again prove his bona fides to a group he in all likelihood hates – a group Vladimir Lenin would identify as “useful idiots.” This, of course, is the political death cult known as evangelicalism. Note I did not say Christian. These folks would arrest, convict and lynch a certain Nazarene carpenter should they ever show up in their Dixiestan they hail from. And for good reason, the Jesus character preached empathy and forgiveness. All these cretins want is totalitarian control, and of course the Earth to blow up just like a Michael Bay movie. Because, Jesus of course. “What are you talking about?” you might ask, not knowing the extent of these madmen’s delusions. If you find an evangelical who actually studied the bible, evangelical style (hint: it’s not the same reading your Priest or Calvinist minister gives you) – ask them what happens in the end. They’ll say “JEEESUS comes back! Yay!” Ask them how. They’ll hem and they’ll haw, but if you nail them down they’ll tell a story about how everything goes bad, then they pack up all the Jews, send them off to Jerusalem so they can nuke them, and then HOORAY! Jesus. This is what they believe. It’s as batshit crazy as any tale of Xenu or golden tablets. It’s as crazy as a guy flying to heaven on a winged horse, or magic water. Only those stories only end up with people out of money. The evangelical plan ends up with everyone dead, Jews first. And this IS their goal. It’s in their publications, their five year plans, their to-do lists from God himself. This is what they want.
