<title>Party Switchers in 5...4...3...2...1...</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/11/4/917624/-Party-Switchers-in-5-4-3-2-1</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;I won&#x27;t insult anyone&#x27;s intelligence with a long intro, just a poll.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;How many Blue Dogs will switch to the GOP in the next 90 days? Any Senators (remember Shelby and Campbell after the 1994 wipeout?)?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Actually, not a poll, just food for thought...Okay, a poll after the jump.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;An interesting NYTimes magazine essay just hit the internet. I am truly sorry to make this a crappy little link/nondiary, but it&#x27;s worth reading in its entirety and (mostly) enjoying.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;link below&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Desperate ******bag Jay Leno Dumps on Public Option</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/11/19/805968/-Desperate-bag-Jay-Leno-Dumps-on-Public-Option</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Douchebag Jay dumped on the public option in his monologue last night. You know, his...you mean you don&#x27;t know? Jay has a show...Stop me if you were unaware of this. I thought perhaps you were one of the nine people who watch him in his &#x27;new&#x27; show in his new timeslot. You aren&#x27;t?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Of course you aren&#x27;t. My bad. Link below the jump.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Get the dang kids in the Public Plan!</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/11/1/799484/-Get-the-dang-kids-in-the-Public-Plan</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Two things in the House plan that seem to me to be at odds--particularly if it&#x27;s going to be based on negotiated rates--is the public plan portion of the bill and the extension of parents&#x27; rights to have children on their plan up until age 26.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Why the GOP won&#x27;t regain Congress in 2010: Me!</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/10/1/788454/-Why-the-GOP-won-t-regain-Congress-in-2010-Me</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;I&#x27;ve been thinking over the last week about why I&#x27;m so convinced that the GOP will not be able to take back many seats next year, and basically it comes down to this. They won&#x27;t because of me.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Not because I&#x27;m Soros-like God, with bottomless pockets, nor that I have a brilliant electoral strategy. Really, it&#x27;s because I am so much like you.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Rich Benjamin video nails the bagger racism w/update</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/9/17/783287/-Rich-Benjamin-video-nails-the-bagger-racism-w-update</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;There&#x27;s a new book coming out by a Stanford scholar who spent some time in whites-only exurbs, found friendliness but cluelessness about how segregated America is once again becoming. It&#x27;s not my intention to hawk the book or even the writers&#x27; fine work, but I did want to pass along a link to the YouTube ad and particularly the responses to it.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;In a nutshell, you see in the video the &#x22;But we&#x27;re not racists&#x22; public face of the new segregation, and in the comments you see what these folks say when they don&#x27;t have a camera in their faces. It&#x27;s mind-blowing.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;More and a YouTube link after the jump, with the over-the-top vile bagger responses that made even jaded old me blush.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Link and disclaimer below the fold.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;UPDATE: the &#x27;nailing&#x27; I referred to has less to do with the author&#x27;s book as it has to do with the comments the YouTube video engendered and the juxtaposition of the two. Troutfishing&#x27;s recc&#x27;d diary also made me think using the term &#x27;bagger&#x27; so loosely is a mistake. Title fail, perhaps. I do encourage you to click through and read the comments if you&#x27;re so inclined.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Hey, NYTimes, end the weasel-words and make history again!</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/5/4/727628/-Hey-NYTimes-end-the-weasel-words-and-make-history-again</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Today&#x27;s NYTimes &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/04/us/politics/04detain.html?_r=1&#x26;amp;ref=us&#x22;&#x3E;story&#x3C;/a&#x3E;: &#x22;Interrogation Debate Sharply Divided Bush White House&#x22; by Mark Mazzetti and Scott Shane, used the following terms to avoid the simple noun &#x22;torture&#x22; when discussing what the US did to detainees:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;brutal tactics
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;C.I.A. methods (X2)
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;interrogation policy
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;the program (X5)
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;C.I.A. program (X4)
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;the policies
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;coercive interrogation methods (X3)
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;interrogation program
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;agency&#x27;s methods
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;harsh interrogation(s) (X4)
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x22;enhanced&#x22; interrogation
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;coercive methods
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;physical pressure&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;You &#x3C;em&#x3E;will&#x3C;/em&#x3E; find the word &#x27;torture&#x27; used in that story, but only in reference to a UN proclamation against it. The rest of the article is a lovely hatdance by the writers, apparently still unwilling (or by editorial fiat, unable) to use the proper and accurate term when discussing US tactics.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;But the Times has had no problem using the term torture elsewhere, for the same tactics...&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Ask your GOP friend why they want to make rape legal.</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/4/24/723963/-Ask-your-GOP-friend-why-they-want-to-make-rape-legal</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;It seems to me like that there&#x27;s one good analogy to use whenever one of these torture enablers says something like, &#x22;How can it be a crime if we do it to our own people?&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The reply? &#x22;Because in our SERE program, participants are doing it willingly. They volunteered for it, and they know that everyone in the room knows that.&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The predictable response will be &#x22;What difference does that make? It&#x27;s the same techniques, the same result.&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The next point is key...&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Torturer&#x27;s club was simply planning for the fallout from another attack</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/4/23/723477/-Torturer-s-club-was-simply-planning-for-the-fallout-from-another-attack</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;One thing that I&#x27;m sure many here have already figured out (I think I&#x27;m quite late to this realization), is that the core group of terror enablers in the Bush administration weren&#x27;t primarily concerned that Americans would get killed in another mass attack. Their real nightmare was that America would get attacked and they would be blamed. They knew the tactics were unlikely to give them any info they couldn&#x27;t get (more efficiently) in other ways. They knew they were breaking the law. The reason they did it was because they were convinced another attack would happen on their watch and they needed something extraordinary, unprecedented, to show they tried to prevent it.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;My reasoning below.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>A lede for any interviewer of McCain</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/9/11/594732/-A-lede-for-any-interviewer-of-McCain</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;I realize that there are as many suggestions for ways to go after McCain as there are diarists, but I would like to see any interviewer, during a debate or the increasingly uncommon press conferences, ask the following question of McCain:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x22;After 8 years of having a leader who literally had no idea what was going on in his administration--the crimes, the perjury, the incompetence--how is it that you are allowing others in your campaign to operate in a way that you don&#x27;t condone?&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>GOP Hearts Sly Stone?</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/9/5/588341/-GOP-Hearts-Sly-Stone</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Now, I know a lot of you are roughly my age (48) and know what Sly Stone looked like when he performed (a bit of mic fellatio, anyone?), but I had to chuckle when I heard the GOP playing &#x22;Everyday People&#x22; on the PA after McCain&#x27;s speech. This, along with &#x27;Barracuda&#x27;, is a bit off the wall.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Seriously, what do you think would have happened to the pacemakers in that room if they&#x27;d had actual footage of the Family Stone up on that Jumbotron? Hell, the Code Pink protesters caused enough anxiety, and they weren&#x27;t carrying instruments.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;For you youngsters who may not know what I&#x27;m talking about, enjoy, (and sorry for the rather brief diary, just thought it deserved its own entry).&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>HBO&#x27;s upcoming &#x22;Recount&#x22;, I&#x27;ve seen it, and it deserves netroots support</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/4/18/498257/-HBO-s-upcoming-Recount-I-ve-seen-it-and-it-deserves-netroots-support</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;First of all, this is my first diary (although I&#x27;m a long-time reader and let an old ID lapse) and secondly, I&#x27;m NOT in any way affiliated with HBO or anyone associated with the film. Also, I apologize if this for some reason isn&#x27;t an appropriate diary, but here goes.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I recently saw the upcoming HBO feature &#x22;Recount&#x22; about the 2000 Florida recount, starring Kevin Spacey as Ron Klain, Denis Leary as Michael Whouley, Laura Dern as Katherine Harris (worth the price of a month of HBO right there) and other great actors. The reason I saw it is that I wrote up an interview with Spacey for a television magazine, which is something I do periodically for kicks.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
